On the first day of the sixth annual Wild West Air Fest, hundreds swarmed through the gates at the Steamboat Springs Airport. Some were prompted to reminisce at the sight of the vintage aircraft. Others made new memories as they climbed on the planes and learned about their history.

Parker man dies after Grand County wreck
The wreck occurred on Grand County Road 25 about seven miles north of Kremmling, near Wolford Mountain Reservoir. Nicholas Dean Oaks, 20, was ejected and died from his injuries at the scene. Two passengers sustained minor injuries.

Soroco football wins opener at Springer, New Mexico
If conventional can equate to boring, the Soroco High School football team’s opening game of the season Friday at Springer, N.M., was anything but. The Rams, postseason eligible in 8-man football this season for the first time, used a late special teams touchdown Friday to come away with a 16-12 win.
Soroco volleyball finishes 3rd at Leadville tournament
The Soroco High School volleyball team finished third Saturday in a tournament in Leadville. Soroco lost, 2-1, to James Irwin, before beating Palmer and Lake County, 2-0. The tournament was best of three games instead of the usual best of five.
Steamboat runners compete well at meet
With lots of inexperience, the Steamboat Springs High School cross-country team was sure to have its share of struggles. But considering the field, more than 300 runners dotted each the boys and girls field Saturday at the pre-state meet at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, and the heat, temperatures were in the high 80s, coach Andy Reust came away from the first meet of the year pleased.
Hayden football wins 1st game of season, 30-8
The Hayden High School football team opened the 2010 season with a 30-8 win against Holyoke on Saturday in Idaho Springs. Hayden (1-0) rode its defense and the ability of quarterback Graig Medvesk to a win.

Oak Creek keeps tradition alive for Labor Day
On Saturday, at Decker Park in Oak Creek, children enjoyed face-painting, a bouncy castle, a water slide and a petting zoo as a part of the Oak Creek’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration. An obstacle course set up by the Oak Creek Fire Department also was a popular attraction at the park. The festivities continue today and Monday.

Business File: Thursday lunch event focuses on tech tools
Colorado Mountain College’s Small Business Resource Center, SCORE and the Routt County Economic Development Cooperative present a Success Steps lunch seminar from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Steamboat Smokehouse, 912 Lincoln Ave. The seminar is titled No Cost/Low Cost Tech Tools You Can Put to Work. The event’s focus is to help people, entrepreneurs and business owners identify Web-based tools that can improve commerce, productivity, security and organization, according to a news release. The $15 cost includes a buffet lunch. CDs with access to Web-based tools will be distributed. Scott Ford, of the economic cooperative, and Roger Good, of SCORE, will lead the discussion. Oak Creek town, with a federal grant through the Department of Local Affairs, is in the first stages of more than doubling its water supply in a project that could be finished by the end of next year. The old 200,000-gallon tank can nearly empty at the highest point of demand.
