Steamboat's Wild West Air Fest links past, present aviation

Annual event is Saturday and Sunday at Steamboat Springs Airport

Vintage and modern machines will be on display at the sixth annual festival this weekend at Steamboat Springs Airport. Airplane and helicopter rides will be available for purchase for those who want to experience the aircraft in action and get a bird's-eye view of the Yampa Valley.

Texture at the heart of Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat show today

Bill Sanders' “Equus Terra,” or Horses of the Earth, will be on display today at the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat during First Friday Artwalk, featuring several ceramic horses, as well as plates and other sculptures. Artists' Gallery of Steamboat will be hosting work from watercolor artist Greg Effinger and fabric artist Sue Gallion along with Sanders during the Friday event.

Steamboat Springs Stage Race speeds to a start

Second annual event started with a time trial today, continues all weekend

Riders blazed through the first day of the four-part race, a time trial in eastern Steamboat Springs. About 350 cyclists are participating in the second annual event, which continues today with the Marabou Ranch Circuit Race. Races begin at 8 a.m.

Steamboat 10K at 10,000 Feet to draw hundreds

Race is one of final three of Steamboat Springs Running Series

Organizers expect about 200 people to show up at the top of Rabbit Ears Pass on Sunday to compete in 10K and 5K races. The total elevation gain of the 10-kilometer run is about 1,200 feet. Three years ago the race drew 70 runners, and last year more than 170 came out.

Old school carpeting recycled in California

The truck finally arrived at 6:30 a.m. Thursday. After it was unloaded, crews at Los Angeles Fibers, a carpet recycling plant in Vernon, Calif., fed more than 20,000 pounds of worn carpeting taken out of Steamboat Springs Middle School and Strawberry Park Elementary School into a carpet-recycling machine.

Flu season is here, and local health care providers are prepping their syringes. The percentage of visits for flu-like illnesses typically begins a steep climb beginning in Sep­tember and doesn’t calm down until December, according to statistics from the state health office.

Hayden opens its season at 1 p.m. Saturday against Holy­oke. Because of the distance between the two schools, the teams will play in neutral Idaho Springs.

Throughout the past few days, the mandolin player for Michigan-based Greensky Bluegrass has been tinkering with the Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," syncopating its beats and transposing it into a new genre.
