After dominating a scrimmage Saturday, Middle Park looked like it might run away with a quick three-game match Thursday. But the Sailors fought back from a two-game deficit and gave the Panthers a run for their money.

Rod Hanna announced the release of his second book of nature and landscape photography, “Colorado’s Seasons of Gold." A 220-page study in autumnal hues, the book consists of 172 digital photographs taken throughout six years during the brief peak in the aspen and cottonwood trees’ annual transition to winter.

The second annual Steam­boat Springs Stage Race registration ended early Wednesday with more racers than the inaugural event, including multiple high-level racers. Race promoter Corey Pis­copo said Wednesday that 350 riders had registered for the four-day stage event that begins Friday and ends Monday. Last year, the event featured 302 riders.

Steamboat sales tax collections up in July

City sales tax collections increased 1.7 percent in July compared with July 2009, marking the city’s first such increase — meaning, a positive change compared to the corresponding month a year earlier — since August 2008.

Steamboat briefs: Hayden Town Council to consider roadway work

The Hayden Town Council is scheduled to consider accepting roadway improvements at the Lake Village subdivision tonight. Approving a resolution to accept the improvements, which have been completed, would allow to town to issue certificates of occupancy on the completed homes.

Steamboat's Black Tie Ski Rentals knots deal for shop

Ian Prichard, of Black Tie Ski Rentals, confirmed Wednesday that he and partner Joe Sternberg have purchased a commercial condominium adjacent to the upper terminal of the Wildhorse Gondola in One Steamboat Place. They purchased the 750-­square-foot retail space for $337,500 from SV Timbers LLC through a business entity called Pitts­­­­ford Partners.

Lodging barometer forecasts busy Labor Day weekend in Steamboat

The Steamboat Springs Cham­­­ber Resort Association expects a slew of events to attract tourists who will stay in more than half the city’s available beds during the last big summer tourism weekend, according to the lodging barometer forecast released Wednesday. The barometer projects 56 percent of lodging will be occupied Saturday night.

Stock Dog Challenge highlights Steamboat’s rich agricultural history

In a stock dog competition, success depends on the actions of more than just the dog, said Mariane Sasak, a local dog trainer and event organizer for this weekend’s seventh annual Steamboat Stock Dog Challenge. In this weekend’s event at Stanko Ranch, almost 100 canines will compete in a contest chasing, herding and cutting a flock of sheep.

Steamboat boys golf team struggles in Delta

The Steamboat Springs High School golf team struggled Wednesday at a tough Devil’s Thumb course in Delta, finishing well behind the pack with a team score of 251. “For some reason, this course gives us fits,” Steamboat coach Steve Dodson said. “I don’t know why. We’ll talk about it.”

1:22 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of a suspicious car in the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue. People in a black Subaru were reportedly in the area earlier trying to start a fight, and the car had returned. Police talked to the people and took one person from the Subaru to detox.
