Steamboat Springs A state championship may be out of reach for Steamboat’s two athletes, but it isn’t for a Hayden runner. Chris Zirkle, competing on the Moffat County High School cross-country team, could have a crack at individual and team titles.
Both would require great days, however.
“It takes a perfect day to win a state championship,” Moffat County coach Todd Trapp said. “Chris has run unbelievable over the course of the season. He’s been doing so well, and I know he’s excited.”
Zirkle seems to be at his peak at the right time. He won last weekend’s regional meet for the second consecutive year and hasn’t lost a race since the same early season event that gave Steamboat’s runners a sneak peak of the course.
Zirkle was fourth in that race.
Moffat County’s boys team enters the season’s final meet ranked sixth.
“There are some real good kids at 4A, and they’ve been running really well, but he’s been running well, too, and he should feel confident going into the meet,” Trapp said. “Chris can compete with any of those top individuals.”
