— Unemployment in Routt County was 8.5 percent in September, according to figures released Friday morning by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The figure is a 0.1 percent increase from August and has not been adjusted for typical seasonal employment changes.

The 8.5 percent figure also is an increase from September 2009, when Routt’s unemployment rate was 6.5 percent.

Routt’s number for September reflects a decrease in the number of people who were unemployed, from 1,200 in August to 1,154 in September. It also reflects a decrease in the labor force in the county, from 14,322 in August to 13,650 in September.

In August, 13,122 people had jobs. In September, that number decreased to 12,496 — 626 fewer jobs.

Statewide, Colorado’s unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August. That number has been adjusted to reflect typical seasonal changes.

“Colorado’s economy remains relatively flat,” Donald Mares, executive director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, said in a news release. “We have not seen the economic jump-start that everyone is eager to see, and these last several months have underscored the fact that little activity is an expected part of a slow recovery process.”

The U.S. rate was unchanged at 9.6 percent in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Those numbers show economic weakness. Best comparison is against year ago numbers (which the paper failed to mention, but hey at least they mentioned size of workforce, number employed and number unemployed).

Workforce is down 1,000 from a year ago. Number employed is down 1,300 from a year ago.

So workforce is declining, but not as fast as number of jobs.
