Steamboat briefs: Registration is open for low-cost blood tests at fair


— Pre-registration is open for low-cost blood tests at Saturday’s Community Health Fair, which is from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Yampa Valley Medical Center. Online registration is being taken at through noon today.

As a part of the fair, North­west Colorado Visiting Nurse Association will offer free breast exams (women also can find out if they qualify for the Women’s Wellness Connection Program for Free Mammograms and Free Pap Smears) and will offer drop-in flu shots for adults 18 and older for $14 at the VNA office, 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101. Aging Well hosts workshop focused on healthier living

Aging Well, a program of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, is hosting a Healthier Living Colorado Workshop, Nov. 3 through Dec. 15 at the Rollingstone Respite House in Steamboat. The class will run from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays for six weeks (except the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). Healthier Living Colorado is a six-week workshop designed to help participants manage chronic conditions to live a better life. Participants learn strategies to help manage stress and emotions, communicate more effectively and improve nutrition and physical habits. The cost for the class, including materials, is $20. Children’s books collected for Lesotho, Africa, library

The Steamboat Homeschool Group is partnering with Peace Corps volunteer Rusty de Lucia and the African Library Project to create a school library in Les­­­otho in Africa. Gently used books for students K-8 are needed.

Collection boxes are in the Story-time Room at the Bud Werner Memorial Library and at Excel Gymnastics. The book drive will last six weeks, and the goal is to collect 1,000 books.

The group is seeking new or gently used baby board books, easy readers, picture books, juvenile literature/chapter books, K-8 textbooks (English, math, geography, and science), dictionaries, and encyclopedias and atlases that made after 1990. Paperback versions are preferred to keep shipping costs down.

Howelsen Hill ski passes on sale online, at office

The city of Steamboat Springs is offering two new ways to buy Howelsen Hill Ski Area season passes. Season passes can be purchased at 245 Howelsen Parkway at the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services office or online at The ski area will be open Dec. 4 through March 27, conditions permitting.

Purchased passes can be picked up at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area concession stand from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting Nov. 15. Pass­holders 18 and younger must have a new picture taken every season. Skiers and snowboarders also can sign the release, pay and pick up a pass at the Howelsen Hill concessions beginning Nov. 15. Pre-season rates are valid through Dec. 31.

Steamboat begins offering Start Smart Youth program

The city of Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space, and Rec­­reational Services Depart­­ment is offering a new program, Start Smart Youth, for 3- to 5-year-olds this fall. Developed by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, the six-week instructional program helps parents work one on one with their children while teaching them the basics of sports: throwing, catching, kicking and batting. The program helps prepare children for organized youth sports. The program is being offered by a grant from Northwest Colorado LiveWell.
