Mike Lawrence is a citizen like everyone else, is this part of your extra punishment to write a special article about his DUI. I see you didn't put your name to the article cause maybe you got something to hide. I think he should have simply been put in the jail report also. Maybe the man needs help not STONES THROWN AT HIM WHILE HES DOWN.

^^^ Totally agree.

Why call him out with a big headline like that? ...Pretty lame.

Hello Pilot! This is not news worthy! Are you going to write a special post for all DUI's? Or was this just a very special case in your minds? Disgusting piece for a newspaper to write about! Maybe you can give Mike a special bold print in Sundays jail report also! Absolutely horrendous decision by the pillot. I hope that word gets out within your company that all of your employees are held to a different standing in life?

Dear Pilot Ed Staff, What was the point of this posting? Please respond.

why would you even print that? what's the point?

The Aspen Daily News printed an article about the owner of their rag being arrested but that was for trespassing. http://www.aspendailynews.com/section/home/142916

This does seem more than a little harsh and hardly newsworthy.

Maybe there is more to the story than meets the eye. Mike is a nice guy. Perhaps he was celebrating a new job at offer at a credible news organization and there was a tip to the cops to be on the lookout . . . .

Horrible to throw Mike under the bus, he is one of the better writers you have and actually reports what people say with authenticity. I hope he quits his job, he deserves better from his coworkers! I think the jail report is plenty embarrassment enough. You should formally apologize to him. People that make laws or enforce them should be scrutinized but come on, one of your workers. Who signed off on this one? Fire them!

All: Thank you for the honest feedback. Transparency and accountability are extremely important for a community newspaper. For reporters and editors, that means holding ourselves to a higher standard. We believe it's essential the community knows we are as — or even more — willing to report on ourselves as we are about other members of the community. It may not always seem fair, but the reporters and editors at the Pilot & Today know it comes with the territory. I respect that not all of you will agree with that position.

Brent, Thanks for the response and I can respect the Pilot's position if this is the case for all employees. When I saw the article it hit me as somewhat vindictive, I think that's why you're seeing this response. We're also wishing the best for Mike.

There have been no other DUI's at the pilot, interesting. Vindictive seems more like it!

There was at least one other reporter that was arrested for DUI. She had the South Routt beat. The paper also mentioned her arrest. She left the paper shortly afterward.

ummm this would be one of those that would be better off NOT commenting on. Why bring more attention to the guy. And I would say that he has some pretty good grounds for asking for a raise..... Come on Brent, this is petty. And stupid. And if you are going to hold all employees to such standards, why wasn't the another held to such standards when he used MY personal info to contact my employer some time ago for posting a comment he disagreed with about Mr Wall during his....drinking and driving incident??? The man should have been let go. He most certainly wasn't held to standards you say the Pilot stands by. Rob took liberties and abused them, even after a complaint nothing was done. Whats good for the goose......

Small portion of food for thought....

....how many of you(the same that are taking the Pilot to task over their publishing this article) would have reached for nails & hammer, to tack them to the cross, had they not published something about what had happened to their employee? Could you even imagine what the backlash would have been if the Pilot had just decided to let people discover this "news" on their own in the police blotter? I've seen the blobs(blog-mobs) form on here quicker than wildfire can spread. It doesn't take much to incite people on here into typing up their torches & pitchforks.

Brent: doesn't the Record (jail report) accomplish your goal of transparency? Why single him out like that? Seems harsh to me...

Brent, can we get rid of the auto scrolling ad already. There is obviously something wrong with the application that results in the whole page moving up and down. I would of thought the Pilot would of had the professionalism to take care of this already. If your IT people are not skilled enough to fix the problem, then drop it.

How about an explanation, Brent.

Its amazing how you all want to cover up a DUI for someone, what if there was a tragic accident? When ever it got out it would be the same. Its not fun for anyone to get a DUI. Its not fun to be injured or killed by a drunk driver.Drinking and driving(choice) is always a loosing action.Anyone can make a mistake. But its still a mistake.

0

jmm761 2 years, 8 months ago

It is not about covering up a dui, it is about being a newspaper or a tabloid. His name would have appeared in the sunday paper for all the gossip queens in town to get their fix! DUI is a serious matter but convicting someone via the media is just as serious. This is not news, this is smut.

Brent,

I guess "holding ourselves to a higher standard" means we will now have to read about Pilot employees jaywalking, walking dogs off leash, driving with a burned out tail light, etc. I respect your "higher standard" policy, but there should have been consequences in house, NOT additional humiliation in the paper. Did any of the editors check to see if Mike was alright prior to printing the article (no family tragedy for instance)? Thoughtless publication on your part. The medical community should certainly be held to a higher standard, but when one of them ends up in the Police Blotter, I never notice a separate article about their transgressions. An internal personnel policy review is certainly in order on this call as the Pilot is one of the larger employers in town.

Brent -- nicely explained. Most of the posters on here would have been trying to burn you if it had ended up in Sunday's "Jail Report" and you hadn't mentioned it. Some folks are born to be grumpy.

I agree Brent this auto scrolling thing really stinks. Please have them sell differnent ads. I know that they are all vying to get our attention but this is having the opposite effect. I too have turned off flash when I surf this site to prevent this behavior. It also has the side effect of not displaying any of your fancy flash ads.

PS. I tend to agree with the few posters who feel that had the Pilot not published this incident you all would have gone ballistic about them hiding information that might be damaging to them.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Lawrence experienced and error in judgement, but how many of us are lilly white? Each of us should each look at the actions of this member of our community and ask yourself if you might also need to change your behavior.

The irony is that the obnoxious auto-expanding advertisement is for Explore Steamboat.

Contact Info: " Contact the Explore Steamboat Staff

The offices of the Pilot & Today are at 1901 Curve Plaza. The mailing address is P.O. Box 774827, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477."

Auto-advertisement run amok.
