Enrique Lopez’s goal midway through the second half of Friday afternoon’s soccer game gave the Steamboat Springs Sailors a 4-2 lead and the confidence they needed to pick up the win against a key Western Slope League rival.

“Palisade made a game out of it until we scored that goal,” Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said.

Steamboat fell behind early after the hometown Bulldogs scored a goal less than five minutes into the game. But Bohlmann said the Steamboat players didn’t panic and evened the score less than 10 minutes later with a goal of their own. Steamboat’s Ben Massey set up teammate Brandon Marr with a nice crossing pass. Marr headed the ball past the Palisade goalkeeper for the score.

Steamboat took the lead about 20 minutes into the first half, when Hanson Buchner scored the second Steamboat goal of the game. He got the assist from Wilber Ranieri, who set up the score with another solid pass.

The first half ended with Steamboat up, 2-1, against the Palisade Bulldogs.

Steamboat’s Lance Ostrom stretched the lead to 3-1 early in the second half. Palisade responded with another goal a few minutes later to make the score 3-2 and fuel an aggressive Bulldog approach.

“The game had a pretty frantic pace,” Bohlmann said. “We struggled with trying to change the rhythm of the game.”

He said Palisade continued to push the pace with its direct style until Lopez netted the Sailors’ final goal of the game. The coach credited Steamboat’s back three for keeping the balance of the game in the Sailors’ favor. The coach said Michael Wong, Evan DePuy, Kyle Kounovsky and Tommy Lyon were a key component in the Sailors victory and alternated defensively throughout the game.

The win improves the Sailors to 5-2 in league play and 7-3-1 overall. Steamboat is one game behind Battle Mountain, which is leading the league with a 6-1 record. Moffat County is right behind the Sailors with a 4-2 mark in the league.
