Steamboat Springs — The National Weather Ser­­vice is predicting high winds and frigid temperatures for Scholarship Day with a blizzard warning issued for all of Wednesday.

“Wednesday is going to be absolutely brutal,” National Weather Service forecaster Mike Chamberlain said from the Grand Junction office.

He said the visibility on the slopes likely will be just a few feet on the mountain Wednesday with a high of 16 degrees.

“It’s going to be flat nasty; it will be nasty,” he said.

Thursday morning is also will be frigid, and the temperature for Steamboat Springs will be 10 degrees below zero that morning.

The blizzard warning does not include Steamboat but does include Steamboat Ski Area.

The storm also will include winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with frequent gusts as fast as 50 mph.

“This will make travel hazardous or impossible at times due to blinding, blowing snow,” the warning states.

Steamboat Ski Area reported 8 inches of snow in the past 24 hours Monday. Local weather watcher Art Judson said 3 inches of snow fell in town during that same time, with 6 inches added at Dry Lake and 18 inches in the south Flat Tops at Bison Lake in Garfield County.

Driving conditions are ex­­­p­­­ected to remain hazardous through midweek. The Colorado Department of Tran­­­s­­portation closed Colorado Highway 9 about six miles south of Kremmling at about noon Monday because of an accident. The highway reopened at about 1:20 p.m.

The storm is expected to calm Tuesday night and resume Wednesday.

No major crashes

Despite blowing winds and slick roads, law enforcement officers in Routt County reported no injury accidents through Sunday night.

Monday’s early United Airlines flight from Yampa Valley Regional Airport to Denver was canceled. Crews told passengers the plane didn’t make the trip from Denver.

The next flight out of YVRA on Monday, scheduled for 12:49 p.m., took off at 12:57 p.m. en route to Denver, according to www.United.com.
