Families who would like to sign up to receive toys can call Routt County United Way at 970-879-5605. For more information about the program, or to make donations, call Teri Wall at 970-879-6184 or 970-640-7505. Donation boxes will be distributed across Steamboat Springs starting Nov. 27, and a truck will be set up at Steamboat Motors starting Nov. 24.

— The Toys for Tots local organizers have pulled together two fundraisers to boost the event’s annual toy buy, even as only about half of the local sponsors returned this year.

The Toys for Tots program handed out toys to 229 families last year in Routt and Moffat counties, but despite the success, organizers said they are having a hard time finding the funding to meet this year’s goals.

The Home Builders Association of Steamboat is organizing the event and is seeking money for the second annual fundraiser, but so far, the group has just half of the $6,000 it will take to put on the two fundraisers planned.

“Last year, this time, I think I had 58 sponsors,” organizer Teri Wall said. “I don’t think I even have half of that. The economy has gotten to everybody, and they’ve given all year long to different things.”

Even so, the group has organized two fundraisers before the big toy giveaway.

For the second year, Snow Bowl is hosting a day of bowling and a nighttime bowling tournament, scheduled Dec. 4.

Snow Bowl owner Dewey Whitecotton said this year’s fundraiser would be slightly different. During the day, people can get two games of bowling, shoe rental, a drink and a sandwich for $20 each from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tournament starts at 6 p.m. With three players a team, the cost is $25 a person. That includes a couple of beers, the game and shoe rental.

“It worked pretty well (last year), but this year, I think it’s going to work very well. We have a year’s experience,” he said.

The tournament winners also will get a donated prize.

Wall pulled the second fundraiser together Friday. She said she wanted to bring in The Nacho Men for a concert, but she didn’t think it was going to work because there wasn’t enough money to hire the Denver-based entertainers.

Just as she called the group to cancel, they told her to not give up so fast. They agreed to come and play a show at The Steamboat Grand with the understanding that they might not get their usual rate.

“They’re taking less for now; they said if we can raise more, that’s great,” Wall said.

The Nacho Men describe their act as a mix of humor with “swing, ’50s, ’60s, disco and beyond.”

The tickets are $40 each or $75 for a couple, adults only. The price includes dinner, two beers, and unlimited soda and lemonade.

The fundraising will go to buy toys for local families.

The Routt and Moffat County fundraisers were separated this year, so all money raised in Routt will go to buy toys for local children. Clothing and other winter gear will be divided with Grand County.

Wall said that when families come in to get toys, they will be asked what they need and can take those items at no cost.

There will be several toy donation spots across the county, including at the schools, and toy distribution will be at Bud Werner Memorial Library from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 19 to 23.

Families who would like to sign up for toys can call Routt County United Way at 970-879-5605.

Just wondering, why all the effort to raise money...to make money to buy toys for these kids? Why not just buy a toy and donate it? When you have to feel like you are gaining something, a bowling game and a beer to make a child happy on Christmas morning...it kind of cheapens the thought behind it. Is there not going to be the big red truck at Steamboat Motors this year? All we had to do for that was give a toy and hear , "Thank-you, Happy Holidays!"

bandmama,

There are not enough donations in toys. The money we raise is sent to our Marine contact who then buys us toys to start us off. The Marine Corp Reserve buys toys for all of it's locations. Please realize that though toys are donated and we had a lot come in last year, which was wonderful, the first day of distribution we were running out of toys. The wonderful people of Steamboat stepped up as usual & we had enough to get us through, but this year with more kids and more families out of work, we will need more toys. We are probably looking at double the families that we served last year.

Yes, the truck will be there as always and we thank Stmbt Motors for putting it in the Showroom the day before Thanksgiving and there will also be several drop off boxes around town for those who want to buy toys to donate.

If you wish to purchase a toy for the boxes we thank you, if you wish to adopt a family and buy the toys for them, we thank you for that also.

I hope you have a wonderful Holiday.

Oh and just a quick question please. Do you feel the same about the fundraisers that all the other organizations have?

teejay- Thank you for the information! I think it is a wonderful thing that you are doing. You hit the nail right on the head by stating that the need has increased this year. Not everyone can afford to attend the fundraisers but still want to donate what they can. I am very pleased to know that the truck will be at Steamboat Motors. makes it a little easier for those of us that cant afford the bowling and the show. As to your other question? It depends on what the funds are being raised for. Here is to wonderful season to you too!

bandmama, if you or anyone you know would like to volunteer at our toy store, we'd love to have you. We are looking for volunteers in 4 hr shifts as we'll be open from 8-6 pm Dec 19-23 & we're setting up on Dec 18th. If anyone you know needs things for their kids they can sign up at United Way and if you or anyone you know needs winter items to keep the family warm, they can come down to the toy store and get what they need free of charge. : )

Kathy Nerney here: If anyone is looking for a location to drop off a toy for the TOYS FOR TOTS program...We have a drop off location here at Laurel Street School and Family Center. As the Pre-K teacher here and as the Proud mother of a United States Marine it is my honor to help out with this program. Laurel Street has been a toy drop off point for the past 3 years. We are located directly accross the street from Soda Creek Elementary School and are open Monday thru Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. If you are unable to drop off your donations, please do not hesitate to call the school & I will personally pick up your items at your convience. Thank you all for your continued support. Remember all the donations stay right here in Routt County.
