— Things were downright friendly Sunday between Tate Schroeder and Whitney Turley, two players in this weekend’s 12-and-younger circuit championships at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.

The girls joined together and cruised to a victory in the doubles bracket, knocking down Haley Chirico and Emma Schilling in the finals, 6-1, 6-1.

The girls won’t be working together today, however.

The circuit championships attracted more than 50 top young tennis players to Steamboat Springs. The doubles finals played out Sunday afternoon, but the singles finals will be decided today.

That’s where Schroeder, of Lone Tree, and Turley, of Kaysville, Utah, will see one another again.

They’ll match up at 8 a.m. for today’s singles finals.

“We got what we wanted” Sunday,” Turley said. “We played really well, and we played against tough opponents.”

“We both have strengths and weaknesses, and we go together well,” added Schroeder. “We’re friends.”

That doesn’t mean either girl figures on taking it easy today. Neither would open up about a strategy.

“This is the first time we’ve played each other,” Schroeder said. “It should be fun.”

Brett Finan and Jacob Lapkin won the boys doubles championship, defeating Kevin Adams and Casey Ross, 7-5, 6-4.

Lapkin will play Alec Leddon at 8 a.m. today in the boys finals.
