— There will be no formal services for Memorial Day in Oak Creek this year, but volunteers still plan to place boughs and flags at the gravesites of veterans in the town’s cemetery.

Volunteer Mary Deppe said no activities were planned because the two local Veterans of Foreign Wars post members will be out of town for the weekend.

Deppe, a former member of the now-defunct Ladies Auxiliary VFW, said the town has hosted services in the past, but with low VFW membership and no official meeting space, no activities were planned for this year.

Oak Creek Town Clerk Karen Halterman said this is probably the first year the town has not held a Memorial Day ceremony. She said the cemetery has more than 50 veterans.

The first dated burial in the cemetery was Era B. Johnson on July 15, 1900, according to information from the National Association for Cemetery Preservation Inc.

The cemetery also is listed as a Colorado Historical Site with 1,218 burials from 1900 to 1994, when the cemetery was added to the register of historic sites.
