Steamboat Springs For Karen Goedert and Michael Peilet, Saturdays are family day.
It’s the one day a week the two have off to spend with their 8-month-old daughter, Maya. But it’s also one of the only days a week the two have to get out and exercise. Oftentimes, that means Goedert goes to yoga while Peilet watches Maya. Then Peilet goes on a bike ride while Goedert watches Maya.
But the newly minted parents might have found a solution in Ski Town Stroller Yoga.
Kaela Miller and Jenn Warren-Boisjoli came up with the idea after doing yoga together. It’s not a foreign concept, as the idea has spurned multiple franchises in bigger cities.
Each just had a child and thought the idea would work well in Steamboat.
“It helps moms get out there,” Miller said. “Dads are very welcome and should try it out, too. It’s not just for parents, either. Everybody is welcome.”
Warren-Boisjoli runs Studio Asana, where she teaches yoga, spin classes and group fitness. Miller and Warren-Boisjoli plan to try to do a class Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
The classes begin with 15 minutes of warm-up yoga. That’s followed by a 30-minute walk or run with the babies in the stroller and then another 15 or 20 minutes of yoga and stretching.
“It’s great,” Peilet said. “Having the young one and the Steamboat winter, we both find ourselves getting a lot more out of shape this time of year. Normally, I’ve had six weeks of spin class. But it’s tough to work full time and have a kid. To have a scheduled activity with people that are in the same position as you are, it’s great.”
The class serves as a way for new parents, and moms in general, to get out and work out in a comfortable environment.
It also serves as a way for new parents to meet each other.
“I think one of the best benefits other than getting a workout with your child is getting to know other parents,” Warren-Boisjoli said. “We all have a lot in common when you have a baby.”
Miller and Warren-Boisjoli also are trying to get groups of parents and babies in strollers to do several of the Steamboat Springs Running Series events. Miller will be at several events doing yoga beforehand to introduce it to new parents.
Even on Saturday with the wind whipping a little, Peilet and Goedert said they’d love to come back and do it again.
With their busy schedules, each said Saturday’s class was a perfect start to family day.
“It was wonderful,” Goedert said. “Just having a group to go out and work with, and it’s great we can bring Maya to this. It’s nice to have her with us.”
