Steamboat events stress sustainability

Every Day is Earth Day celebration to highlight local programming

A sure sign of spring in Steamboat is the sight of overstuffed couches, outdated snowboards and mixed dining sets sitting on the edge of the street with a hand-lettered “Free stuff” sign propped against them. Now, Give Your Stuff Away Day is an official holiday in Steamboat. It’s part of a bigger event Saturday — Every Day is Earth Day: Steamboat Celebrates the Planet.

Turning medals into money process is challenging for Spillane, Demong

Looking at Olympic-athletes-turned-international-celebrities such as Lindsey Vonn and Shaun White, it’s easy to think winning a medal on the world’s biggest stage can translate into a lifetime wage. But that’s not always the case. And it hasn’t been, at least so far, for Nordic combined stars Johnny Spillane and Billy Demong.

Vernal, Utah, offers bikers all the trails, fraction of the crowds

Land of the lost

Like Fruita and Moab, Vernal offers a variety of trail complexes at which to ride, and each offers its own challenges. There are about 150 miles of trails in the area, most of which have been built in the past 14 years by Tony Lupcho, owner of Altitude Cycle, the Vernal shop that is the center of all things biking in the region.

Joel Reichenberger: Special seniors

Pueblo often seems like a city lost in time, and I’m not just talking about the 1960s motif that seems so prevalent in town. I come to Pueblo only for high school sporting events, meaning most of my trips have revolved around the Class 4A high school state tennis tournament. Every year — this was my third — it’s been the same.

Steamboat tennis team's No. 2 singles, No. 3 doubles slip to 4th

Steamboat Springs High School’s tennis entries fall in consolation finals Saturday

By some measure it was a disappointing end to what had been a great stretch of tennis for three Steamboat Springs High School players. Kylee Swiggart and the doubles team of Rachel Grubbs and Lauren Siegel both lost their consolation finals matches Saturday at the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Pueblo.

Spirit Challenge in Steamboat attracts locals

Running Series kicks off with annual 5K, 10K race

Despite the inches of slush filling the Steamboat Springs Middle School parking lot, the 25th annual Spirit Challenge had 60 runners preregister for the race. Another 20 showed up Saturday to register and race.

John F. Russell: The few, dedicated runners

For the past several months, my running shoes have been sitting a few feet from my La-Z-Boy recliner, begging me to lace them up and hit the road. Sadly, I have not. I have at least 100 excuses why I have not put them on and taken a lap around my neighborhood.

Steamboat Springs High School sports face budget shortfall

There is a harsh reality looming for sports at Steamboat Springs High School. Simply put, the game — and the way it’s paid for — is changing. Budget shortfalls have already forced the Steamboat Springs School District to cut nearly $1.9 million from its 2010-11 budget. And the cuts also are making their way into the high school’s athletic department.

Carnival in Steamboat has new importance

Amid budget cuts, proceeds could provide school with basics

The Spring Into Summer carnival to benefit Strawberry Park Elementary School and Steamboat Springs Middle School starts Thursday. And there may not be a better time. The 2010-11 Steamboat Springs School District budget has been reduced by nearly $1.9 million. Last year’s carnival raised about $8,000, but DeBlasis hopes that number doubles.

Lyman Orton: Catamount gating

A vocal minority of homeowners at Catamount Ranch & Club (the golf course area) is agitating to get a “security” gate installed at the entrance. As one of the founders of Catamount, I consider this a slap in the face to the greater Steamboat Springs community and not at all the intent we had in creating the place.

Even in difficult economic times, the chance to own a fishing property on the lower Elk River, fewer than 10 miles from Steamboat, doesn’t come around often. Tony and Karen Connell are banking on that reality.

Best of the Web: Economy

id he really say 5-7 years before construction returns to 2007/2008 levels? Maybe 5-7 years before it returns to a more normal level of like 2003 to 2005. 2007/08 was such a crazy boom that those levels would not be sustainable without a far larger population base.

Our View: Press ‘pause’ on base area

The Steamboat Springs City Council should resist the temptation Tuesday to approve $2.2 million in base area promenade work until the city’s ability to access additional funds and generate enough tax incremental financing to pay off the debt becomes clear.

Because of the process of economic globalization, our communities — which have been ravaged by what we call “affluence” — are now at the end of very long and fragile supply chain upon which we depend for even our most essential needs. Our community is vulnerable, exposed and at risk.
