Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School track and field team already had three athletes qualify for the state track and field meet.
On Thursday, on the first day of the regional track meet in Grand Junction, the Tigers qualified several more and are in a good position to qualify even more heading into today’s finals.
Jake Walker (100-meter dash), Chris Zirkle (3,200-meter run) and Rene Valdez (high jump) had all pre-qualified for the state meet.
On Thursday, Zirkle finished third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:43, earning a spot at state. Valdez won the high jump with a jump of 6-6, and Aubree Haskins qualified for state by finishing third in the triple jump with a jump of 32-6.
Walker made today’s finals in the 200 meters, and Hayden Blake made the finals in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Today, Hayden freshman Savannah Williams should have a shot to qualify in the 3,200 meters. Haskins also should vie for a spot in the shot put, and the 1,600-meter relay team of Treyben Letlow, Blake, Valdez and Brentt Gable has an opportunity to qualify.
“It was a good day for everybody,” Hayden coach Barbara Manzanares said. “I’m hoping (today) continues to go well for the kids.”
