Liability issues could block bike track in Oak Creek

Town Board to consult with insurance agent, other small towns

The Oak Creek Town Board found no easy solutions to the liability issue holding up the go-ahead for a pump track and BMX course within town. The town’s insurance carrier, Trident, reportedly said they will not cover a pump and BMX track.

8:27 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a cold report of a hit-and-run crash in the 700 block of Pine Street. A woman reported that she found damage to her garage door where it appeared that a car had backed into it.

Steamboat briefs: Highway Clean-Up Day scheduled for May 22

The fourth annual Highway Clean-Up Day starts with registration from 8 to 8:30 a.m. May 22 on the lawn of the Routt County Courthouse at Sixth Street and Lincoln Avenue. Clean­up is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a barbecue with prizes at How­el­sen Beach. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and bring water, sunscreen, a backpack and work gloves. BOCES approves director's retirement

State guidelines allow Toothaker to return for 2 more years

BOCES Executive Director Jane Toothaker will retire July 1 but will return for two years under provisions allowed by the Public Employees’ Retirement Asso­ci­ation. The board on Thurs­day night approved, 5-1, Tooth­aker’s retirement and two-year contract.

Steamboat base area group optimistic about summer work

Committee supports partial construction plan as city prepares financial options

The committee guiding redevelopment at the base of Steam­boat Ski Area supported a partial plan Thursday for this summer’s work. The Urban Redevelopment Area Advisory Committee voted unanimously to recommend about $2.2 million in spending.

Steamboat boys relay team, jumper nudged to top 18

For several members of the Steamboat Springs High School track and field team, it’s all part of a waiting game now. Competing in Grand Junction on Thursday at the Class 4A Showcase, Steamboat was able to nudge one girl and a boys relay team into the top 18 of their respective events.

Rocky Mountain Dance recital starts tonight in Steamboat

This weekend’s Rocky Mountain Dance recital starts at 6:30 p.m. today and Saturday in the Steamboat Springs High School auditorium. The title of this year’s recital reflects Karin Comeau’s view on dance. It’s called “La Vita è Una Danza,” which means “life is a dance” in Italian.

Jazzjets plan high-energy show in Steamboat

Band performs today with Arts Council singer-songwriter series

Those who venture to the Depot Art Center tonight can expect a high-energy show featuring jazz classics with a fresh twist, Lianne Pyle pledged. The lead vocalist of Lianne and the Jazzjets said her band would reintroduce classic jazz standards, such as songs by Ella Fitzgerald, in arrangements all its own.

What to do this week in Steamboat for May 14 to 20

David Newman, chant musician and Nutone recording artist, unites the worlds of Western rock and folk music with that of Eastern, Indian kirtan call-and-response chants. He’s touring to promote his CD, “To Be Home,” and will play at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Yoga Center of Steamboat. Tickets are $20 in advance.

Swiggart’s run to semifinals is highlight for Steamboat tennis

Steamboat Springs High School's Kylee Swiggart survived a tough, three-set quarterfinals match and was the only Sailors tennis player to advance to play today in the semifinal round of the state tournament. The squad’s other five entries in the season-ending tournament all lost in the first or second round.

Steamboat Springs Running Series set to start with 5K, 10K races

The 2010 Steamboat Springs Running Series kicks off Satur­­day with the 25th annual Spirit Challenge. The race features 5- and 10-kilometer races, both of which begin at 10 a.m. at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Runners can preregister at www.runningseries.com until 5 p.m. today or at Ski Haus until noon today.

‘Rookie Day’ hopes to rein in riders

Wendy Lind hopes Saturday’s National Reining Horse Asso­ciation “Rookie Day” will draw an enthusiastic group of riders who are ready to learn about reining. “Rookie Day” begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Routt County Fairgrounds in Hayden. The first part of the day features a clinic where riders will learn a variety of maneuvers, including slide stops, spins, circles and lead changes, critical in the sport of reining.

Hayden track team qualifies several more athletes for state

The Hayden High School track and field team already had three athletes qualify for the state track and field meet. On Thursday, on the first day of the regional track meet in Grand Junction, the Tigers qualified several more and are in a good position to qualify even more heading into today’s finals.

Soroco track team shows well in Grand Junction

David Bruner is in his fourth year as track and field coach for Soroco High School, and he doesn’t think the Rams have had as good an opening day of the regional track meet as they did Thursday in Grand Junction.

Northwest Colorado Products plans to provide something for everyone today and Saturday during its annual meeting and expo. The two days of events begin at 5 p.m. today at the Steamboat Springs Community Center with the organization’s annual meeting, featuring the inaugural presentation of the Ann Copeland Emerging Producer Award and a “What’s in Our Foodshed?” community forum.
