That was the key message Routt County Search and Rescue’s Darrel Levingston told a group of first- through fifth-grade Strawberry Park Ele­mentary School Montessori students Monday during the annual “Hug a Tree” presentation.

Wet weather has postponed paving and excavation work on Lincoln Avenue until Monday, and a project spokeswoman said the additional delay makes completion of the project by June 30 “highly unlikely.”

Steamboat briefs: FEMA emergency food, shelter funds available

A national board, chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, has selected the Northern Rockies jurisdiction to receive $41,657 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Routt, Eagle, Pitkin, Summit, Grand and Jackson counties. A local board will determine how funds are to be distributed among local agencies providing emergency food and/or shelter programs that have applied for funding. The local board is seeking applications from agencies that are a private, voluntary nonprofit group or unit of government; are eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; are non-discriminatory; and have a voluntary board.

Marie Matta: A dangerous step

I am writing in response to Omar M. Campbell’s letter of May 5, 2010, “Follow Arizona,” in which he applauds Arizona’s new law (SB 1070) for dealing with illegal immigration. I am deeply troubled by the expressions of support that this measure appears to have received. I agree that the issue of illegal immigration has long been urgent, and like many citizens, I am disappointed that the Obama administration has not given immigration a higher priority on the agenda of national reform.

It’s time for the Steamboat Pilot & Today to require an authenticated identity from anyone submitting an online comment to an article or letter appearing in the newspaper. I had been slowly coming around to that opinion, and the recent string of comments about Omar Campbell’s letter to the editor (“Follow Arizona”) put an end to any lingering uncertainties that I might have had. It was a sad, dismaying discussion of what could have been an important topic.

About 90 sixth- through eighth-graders put down their pencils and picked up brushes Tuesday afternoon to help paint Hayden Middle School’s hallways and classrooms. The activity was part of Global Youth Service Day, which encourages youths to participate in service projects.
