Tom Ross: Solitude in Little Yampa Canyon

We didn’t bash through any Class III rapids in Little Yampa Canyon during the weekend, but we glimpsed eaglets in their nests and spooked owls from their daytime roosts. Those wildlife encounters were enough to make the weekend worthwhile, but we also enjoyed some great companionship and memorable meals during the 33-mile float from just south of Craig to the historic hamlet of Lay.

Whiteman Primary receives a violin from November visitor

Haskell Solomon, an 85-year-old musician from Los Angeles, visited Steamboat Springs in November and made a trip to see the Lowell Whiteman Primary School and meet with its students. Haskell said he was so moved by the kindness of the people he met and so impressed with the students’ musical ability that he wanted to make a donation — a 200-year-old German violin.

The intersections where Linc­oln Avenue meets Third and 12th streets will have designated left-turn lanes for eastbound traffic after construction work resulted in significant backups in both directions Monday.

The Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team started strong Tuesday at Golden before falling, 8-0. The weather didn’t help either team. The rain held off during warm-ups, but it started drizzling around kickoff. By the time the game got going, both teams had to trudge through a downpour.

The Routt County Board of Commissioners on Monday asked its legal department to research an error in tax collections that left the West Routt Fire Protection District short $16,289 in 2009 property tax revenues.

Upper Yampa conservancy district forming mission statement amid regional demands

Water pressure rising

A regional water supplier is formalizing its future goals as pressure for water mounts on both sides of the Continental Divide. The Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District already has announced plans to raise Stagecoach Reservoir in South Routt County, adding nearly 3,200 acre-feet of water storage capacity to the reservoir’s existing 33,275 acre-feet. Work on that project will begin this summer.

No bikes allowed at new Steamboat skatepark

Use limited to skateboarders, inline skaters because of wear issues

Now that the new concrete skatepark in Steamboat Springs finally is open, City Parks Supervisor Ernie Jenkins hopes users will bring a renewed sense of enthusiasm, their best tricks and their skateboards. But the city requests that cyclists leave their bikes at home. It’s a new rule that caught a few local cyclists off guard, but one that Jenkins thinks will extend the life of the park.
