Steamboat police have truck case suspects

Steamboat detectives plan to interview men in coming weeks

Zach Fridell

— Steamboat Springs Police Department officers have identified two suspects in the investigation surrounding a stolen pickup and trailer that crashed just outside of town.

The truck and trailer, both stolen, were found crashed April 24 near U.S. Highway 40 and Weiss Drive. The trailer and truck bed also were filled with stolen construction equipment.

Detective Nick Bosick said he has a suspect in the case who probably no longer lives in Steamboat Springs but probably got help from a person who does.

“I’m hoping to get down to where I think this guy lives next week some time and see what happens,” Bosick said.

Bosick said he did not want to identify the suspect publicly because he did not want to alert the man.

No driver was present when the truck and trailer were found, and both vehicles were towed to an impound lot. On the night of April 25, someone reportedly broke into the impound lot and tried to set fire to the truck and trailer using gasoline.

“These guys definitely tried to set the truck and the trailer and everything inside it on fire, but they weren’t successful,” Bosick said. “The fire really didn’t do that much damage to much of anything. It melted a tarp onto a lot of the stolen property that was in the back of the pickup truck, but it really didn’t do much damage to the truck or trailer.”

The truck, trailer and construction equipment, including air compressors and expensive power tools, have been reported stolen from oil-well sites in Wyoming. The truck was listed as stolen from Wamsutter, Wyo., about 145 miles from Steamboat. Two county sheriff’s offices in Wyoming are working on the case.
