Steamboat Springs Aleigh Aurin scored twice for Steamboat Springs and Olivia Gorr once, but it wasn’t enough, and the Sailors’ junior varsity girls lacrosse team dropped its season finale at home, losing, 10-3, to Battle Mountain on Wednesday night.
Steamboat was right in the thick of things in an evenly played first half, but a late-period Husky surge decided the game. Battle Mountain blew open what was already a 2-1 lead, scoring three times in the final 45 seconds of the first half.
Steamboat answered with two goals in the second half, but couldn’t regain momentum. After closing to 6-3, Battle Mountain put in four more shots to end any hope of a comeback. Kristy Waring led the way for the Huskies, who were a step too fast for Steamboat all night. She scored five goals.
The junior varsity team is Steamboat’s only high-school level girls lacrosse team after a varsity incarnation was folded two years ago. For a feature on the freshman-laden team, read Sunday’s Steamboat Pilot & Today.
