Trout Creek Bridge construction on schedule

New steel pieces delivered Monday to site at Trout Creek

There should be fewer dented fenders and scraped doors for motorists when the new Routt County Road 33 bridge over Trout Creek is complete. The new steel bridge was delivered in three pieces Mon­day to the site on Twentymile Road (C.R. 33) southwest of Steamboat Springs. It’s 36 feet wide compared to just 20 feet wide on the old bridge.

Steamboat briefs: Eastbound lane of traffic on US 40 to be closed

The eastbound lane of traffic on U.S. Highway 40 through downtown Steamboat Springs will be closed from Sixth to Eighth streets from 9 a.m. to noon today. That eastbound traffic will be detoured onto Yampa Street.

Steamboat fire, police chiefs want to impose fines for false alarm calls

Another call, another false alarm. Dust from construction, a faulty wiring system, or failure to disconnect the alarm system before maintenance. Emergency responders in Steamboat Springs have seen them all, and they’re now introducing an ordinance that would fine repeat offenders of false alarms.

Steamboat sales tax dips 6 percent in March

Figures show slightly larger decrease than expected

After a relatively encouraging February, March sales tax figures showed more of a decrease than at least one city official expected. The city collected a total of $1,901,035 in March sales tax revenue, compared to $2,022,088 in March 2009, according to a preliminary report released Monday.

Steamboat Springs School Board OKs superintendent contract

2 School Board members oppose extension for Cunningham

The Steamboat Springs School Board on Monday night approved, by a 3-2 vote, a three-year contract extension for Superintendent Shalee Cunningham. Cunningham will continue to be paid $150,000 annually, the same salary she has received in her current two-year contract, which expires June 30.

I hope your May Day was at least as schizophrenic as mine was. The rapid-fire weather changes Saturday and Sunday kept me off balance all weekend. We didn’t know whether to put flower garlands around our necks and dance barefoot around the May pole, or to pull our ski boots back out of the gearbox.
