Steamboat Springs All Crimes Enforcement Team Cmdr. Garrett Wiggins announced Tuesday that he has re-entered the race for Routt County sheriff as planned.
Wiggins temporarily exited the race because of the possibility of violating the Hatch Act, a federal provision that prohibits federal employees from running for office. Wiggins wrote in a news release that the final report from a federal grant was filed March 25, and he officially re-entered the race.
“I knew my decision to withdraw from the race could negatively affect my chances of being elected as the next sheriff of Routt County, but I felt I had an obligation to the citizens to maintain honesty and transparency throughout the process,” he wrote.
