Steamboat senior earns trip to national forensics competition

‘Ugly’ performed beautifully

Watching Paula Ninger jump from character to character in her humorous interpretation of “The Ugly Duckling,” one doesn’t know whether to laugh at her or with her. But as long as you’re laughing, it doesn’t really matter. Ninger will head to Kansas City, Mo., in June for the National Forensic League’s national event.

34 Steamboat positions eliminated or reduced for 2010-11

The Steamboat Springs School Board gave final approval Monday to the reduction of 34 school district positions, mostly teaching and paraprofessional jobs, in an effort to meet a projected $2 million budget shortfall in the next academic year. The School Board voted unanimously, twice, to pass two resolutions that finalized the 2010-11 staff reductions through the nonrenewal of contracts for 17 probationary teaching or counseling positions and 17 classified positions, nearly all of which are paraprofessionals.

Outgoing U.S. Treasury Dep­artment official Lee Sachs gave a Steamboat Springs audience a glimpse of the nation’s financial crisis from inside the Obama administration Monday. Sachs spoke to a group of about 50 people squeezed into the loft at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore on Monday. Sachs has been considered a top aide to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Capote agrees to 3-year jail term for reckless action in 2009 fight

Eduardo Capote is scheduled to go before a judge April 16 to change his plea. He is accused of participating in an altercation in January 2009 that led to the death of Richard Lopez. Capote has agreed to a three-year jail term as part of the deal.

Steamboat soccer rolls past Moffat County

Injuries forced Moffat Co­­­unty coach Harry Tripp to make some adjustments to his lineup before Monday night’s game at Gardner Field, but it was the Sailors offensive attack that left the Bulldogs hurting this time around. Sailors won, 8-0. The Sailors jumped out to an early lead behind a goal from Kiersten Henry and three from sophomore Sydney Baucknecht.

Sunday’s victory claims girls team’s 1st ‘Bella Cup’

There was a different air in the Chix with Stix women’s hockey team’s locker room before the Women’s Association of Colorado Hockey B1 Cha­mpionship game Sunday. The room was buzzing, and every player was focused. Then the Chix managed a feat 17 years in the making — they brought home the “Bella Cup” and claimed their first-ever division championship.

Cheerleaders bring home title

Seventeen members of Ro­­­cky Mountain Cheerleading of Steamboat Springs traveled to Denver last weekend and came home with a division championship at the Denver Nationals competition. The two-day dance and cheerleading competition was held at the Denver Convention Center.

Hayden sends 9 wrestlers to state

Middle schoolers head to Denver

When the top middle-school wrestlers in the state hit the mats at the National Western Complex in Denver this Friday, nine young grapplers from Hayden will be in the mix. “This is a pretty big deal for our kids,” coach Ty Camilletti said. “It’s a fantastic event, and all of our wrestlers take it pretty seriously.”

City, county to host lodging tax workshop

The Craig City Council will host a public workshop at 6:30 p.m. April 7 at City Hall, 300 W. Fourth St., to discuss the possibility of implementing a city lodging tax. The Moffat County commission also will attend the workshop.
