Steamboat lacrosse knocks off Fruita

—  The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team stayed undefeated on the season Friday, winning at Fruita, 12-3.

Garret Ehrick scored five times for the Sailors, and Brian Bertrand had three as the team managed to crack up a close game with a strong second-half run.

“It was a tight game in the first half, but we kept pounding away,” Steamboat coach Bob Hiester said.

Steamboat turned a 2-1 first-period lead and a 5-2 halftime advantage into the comfortable final score. That avalanche of second-half goals proved plenty impressive to Hiester.

“That was probably the best athletic team we’ve played,” he said. “Our defense really played tough. They were quick and aggressive, so we had to play well.”

Jack Spady scored twice for the Sailors, and Tyler Samlowski and Eric Trousil each scored once.

The team returns to action at 11 a.m. today, completing its two-game road trip against Grand Junction.
