Tyler Jewell and Lindsay Lloyd raced to national parallel giant slalom titles Friday afternoon on the slopes of Steamboat Ski Area during the first of two Race to the Cup NorAm Alpine snowboarding events. Jewell trained in Steamboat Springs leading up to his first Olympic appearance in 2006.

The band will play as part of the 11th annual Bud Light Rocks the Boat free concert series 3 p.m. Saturday in Gondola Square at the base of Steamboat Ski Area.

Advisory group postpones decision about base area project
The citizens committee that reports to the Steamboat Springs City Council about the construction of the new promenade at the base of the ski area adjourned after three hours Thursday without making a recommendation about how to get the best project for the $4.5 million it has to spend this summer.

City, contractors ask for public’s help during US 40 work
The U.S. Highway 40 repaving project will result in one lane of traffic in each direction through phased sections of downtown Steamboat starting April 5 and likely continuing through June 30. City staff and Scott Contracting are asking for the public’s help in making traffic manageable.

Garret Ehrick scored five times for the Sailors and Brian Bertrand had three as the team surged past a close score with a strong second-half run. The boys ended up winning 12-3 on the road.
Steamboat pass prices edge up for 2010-11
Resort won't offer an Ultimate Pass, adds six-day, 15-day option
Ski Corp. released its pass prices Friday afternoon, adding six-day and 15-day options and dropping the Ultimate Pass, which included Copper Mountain and Winter Park. Adult season passes bought through June 1 will be $899.

Unemployment rose from 6.8 percent in January to 7 percent in February. That represents 1,069 people without jobs in January and 1,109 in February, a 40-person increase.

The Steamboat Springs Planning Commission tabled the final development plan until April 22. Commission members asked for revisions to the plan for an addition to Howelsen Ice Arena.

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra celebrates a new name with a symphony for a new world Sunday when it closes its 2009-10 season with a program of Romantic-era music by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Music starts at 5 p.m. Sunday at Strings Music Pavilion. The orchestra will play the same program at 7 p.m. Saturday at Moffat County High School.

J4 Junior Olympics showing excites coach
Improvement was what Alpine skiing coach Jeff Hostetler hoped to see at this year’s J4 Junior Olympics, and the young athletes from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club gave him plenty to watch last week in Winter Park. “Most of these kids had to work super hard just to qualify for the Junior Olympics,” Hostetler said.

Ski coaches Ryan Roberts and Gladys Weidt joined a van full of Steamboat Springs Alpine skiers Thursday for a trip to Telluride for the SmartWool Championships. The coaches hope the athletes will be able to build on results earlier this month at the J3 Junior Olympic Championships in Vail.

The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team looks to add road-tested to its résumé today, as the team preps for its first legitimate road trip of the year. Steamboat plays at 4 p.m. today at Fruita, and at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grand Junction.
Steamboat soccer downs Rifle
Kiersten Henry answered it three minutes in. Haley Brookshire did so 13 minutes in, and Henry again did it in the 20th minute. After wading through slow starts and a lack of early scoring punch through two games, the Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team solved the sluggish starts against Rifle winning, 6-0.
Memorial Randonee ski race set for April 3
It’s a ski patrol thing, Kyle Lawton said. And when something happens to someone in that community, as it did in April 2007 when Steamboat patroller Cody St. John was killed in a car accident, it’s not a group likely to forget. St. John will be remembered again this year with the second annual Cody’s Challenge Randonee Race.

Birgitta Lindgren, owner of the Steamboat Ski Touring Center, will host the ninth annual Nordic Festival, which is a celebration of Nordic skiing in the Yampa Valley. Olympians Taylor Fletcher, Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane are expected to be on hand to sign autographs.

12:20 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a request for a welfare check in Riverside Plaza. A man reportedly was sleeping in a blanket near the road. Officers talked to the man and learned he was trying to get a ride to Hayden. Officers tried to find the man a ride but could not and gave him a courtesy ride to the west side of town.

A cooking class demonstration and fundraiser with Dianne Stoyko is from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at 1160 Fairway Woods. The cost is $75 per person, and the event raises money for New Frontiers, an organization that funds programs including the annual Girls to Women conference for eighth-grade girls. RSVP to 871-9845. Pimps of Joytime promise dance music at free show in Steamboat
About five years ago, Brooklyn-based musician Brian J. was getting ready to make a record he knew would lead to creating a band. The band became The Pimps of Joytime, a heavily funk-oriented group with elements of soul and a live show that draws on the variation and cohesiveness of Brooklyn’s DJ culture. The band plays a free concert at 3 p.m. Saturday in Gondola Square at Steamboat Ski Area.

Taylor to be new head of school at Lowell Whiteman
Current Head of School Walt Daub retiring
Chris Taylor, 62, will take the helm at The Lowell Whiteman School in June. He will replace Head of School Walt Daub, who is retiring after spending 12 years at Lowell Whiteman, the school’s Board of Trustees announced Tuesday.
Sustainability Council promotes Earth Hour in Steamboat
The Yampa Valley Sustainability Council hopes Steamboat Springs will be a bigger player in this year’s Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a global initiative started in 2007 by the World Wildlife Federation to encourage everyone to turn off their lights for an hour on a day once a year to take a stand against climate change.

Mild weather brings out bears in Steamboat
1st black bear sighting of the year is reported this week
Mild weather and rapidly melting snow have roused some of Steamboat’ furriest residents; the first reported bear sighting of the year was called in Tuesday. Colorado DOW area wildlife manager Jim Haskins said it’s no surprise that bears will start appearing across town as they wake from hibernation.
