Gusty winds forced the all-day closure of Steamboat Ski Area on Friday, caused pockets of small power outages around the county, and resulted in an unexpected boom for some local businesses. High winds that ski area officials said reached peak gusts of 79 mph shut down Mount Werner for the entire day.

Powder days have been few and far between this winter, especially compared to the past two winters when Steamboat tallied more than 400 inches of snowfall. The ski area’s season total now is 208.5 inches and the mid-mountain base is 48 inches.

Racers from Steamboat Springs dominated Friday’s Colorado Junior FIS Cham­pionships (Millennium Cup) at Howelsen Hill, claiming the top four spots and five of the top six spots in the men’s slalom race. The event moved from Steamboat Ski Area because of high winds.
