Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs High School senior Jayde Mattox was named the Optimist Club’s February Teen of the Month. Her parents are Dax and Marci Mattox, of Steamboat Springs.
Mattox, 17, maintains a 3.9 GPA while juggling a number of extracurricular activities, including sports, dance, volunteer work and jobs. At school, Mattox is vice president of the Class of 2010, as well as a member of the school’s Leadership Class. She was a member of the Prom Committee and Link Crew, which seeks to help freshmen transition into life at the high school. She played volleyball all four years of high school and was involved in Dance Showcase her junior year. Mattox has earned an academic letter all four years of high school, was named to the Academic All-State First Team in 2008 and 2009, and was an All-Conference Team selection in 2009.
Mattox’s involvement in the community has included work with Ronald McDonald House, Come Let’s Dance, Young Life, canned food drives and mentoring middle school girls. She has worked at Old Town Hot Springs, Lyon’s Drug soda fountain and State Farm Insurance.
Her hobbies include volleyball, skiing, photography, reading, traveling and dance. She will attend Texas Christian University in the fall with plans to graduate with a nursing degree. She hopes to travel to Uganda and put her future medical knowledge to use. She’d also like to work at a hospital for a couple of years before attending graduate school to become a nurse practitioner.
Her advice to fellow students: “Dare to be different. Expect nothing, work for everything. Believe in yourself, otherwise no one else will. Remember that serving other people and living for something greater than yourself will always make you a happier person.”
