Steamboat boys lacrosse team wins opener

Luke Graham

The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team opened its season Saturday with a 10-5 win against Arapahoe High School’s varsity 2 team.

Steamboat jumped out to a 4-1 first-quarter lead and an 8-1 halftime lead to put the game away.

“It shows us we have no glaring weaknesses,” Steamboat coach Bob Hiester said. “There is nothing where we have to sit down and start from ground zero. But there are a whole lot of things we can get better at.”

Garret Ehrick and Andrew White led Steamboat with three goals apiece. Brian Bertrand, Tyler Samlowski, Jack Spady and Grant McCannon each scored one.

Goalie David Mucklow made seven saves.

Hiester said he was pleased with the way Steamboat played, especially with it being the first game of the season.

He said there is work to be done on the defensive end. But overall, Hiester said Saturday set a very good base for the Sailors to build upon.

“This gives us a real focus on things to work on this week as we’re getting ready for a conference game,” Hiester said. “We’ll take a chance to look at the film and pinpoint things. Like I said, there are no glaring weaknesses. It’s just small things that if we can improve on we’ll be a real good team.”

Steamboat next plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against Durango.
