Absolute real estate auctions are seldom what they are advertised to be, but the gavel came down anyway on nine of 15 Highmark condominiums offered at auction at the base of Steamboat Ski Area on Friday. It won’t be known until at least next week whether any of the winning bids will be accepted by the sellers.

Steamboat girls soccer tops Glenwood Springs
Coaches say that at this early point of the girls soccer season, it’s more about the effort than the polish. So while Steamboat Springs High School beat Glenwood Springs, 2-1, on Saturday in a game best described as disjointed, each coach walked away from Gardner Field feeling a little better about his team.

Sailors beat Arapahoe High School's varsity 2 team 10-5 on Saturday. Up next is an 11 a.m. game Saturday against Durango at Gardner Field.
Nordic team finishes 5th in Norway
The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team finished fifth at a World Cup team event in Oslo, Norway, on Saturday. Johnny Spillane, Todd Lodwick, Billy Demong and Nick Hendrickson started the cross-country ski in fourth, 52 seconds behind Germany.

In a show today at Ghost Ranch Saloon, The Mother Hips guitarist Greg Loiacono expects the basics: “A lot of rock ’n’ roll songs, a lot of singing, two guitars, bass and drums. It gets loud sometimes, and sometimes it gets macho-sensitive,” he said.

The North Routt Coureur des Bois will return for the sixth winter Sunday, and it’s bigger than ever. What started as a friendly, local 60-person race in 2005 will now feature about 200 racers hailing from all corners of the state, country and globe.

From the start of summer, the Hayden High School boys basketball team’s goal was to make it to the state tournament. That much it accomplished by romping through the regional tournament, earning the Tigers their first state tournament berth in 28 years.

Drew Roberts came full circle at Howelsen Hill at his final NCAA championships. The University of Colorado senior and Steamboat Springs native finished 15th in the men’s slalom, but that was the last thing to bring a smile to his face.

Steamboat Brief: City reopens Spring Creek Trail and park to public
The City of Steamboat Springs has reopened the Spring Creek Trail and Spring Creek Park for public access, according to a news release. The trail was closed in January to all public access for hazard tree removal and fire break operations.
February marks 15 years since Hayden’s Dick Roberts was last seen
The missing mayor
It’s been 15 years since Richard “Dick” Roberts’ gray and white Ford pickup was found in the Utah desert near the Colorado state line, surrounded by a cluster of pinyon pines. Roberts’ wallet, car keys and .22-caliber rifle were missing and so was the 6-foot-tall, 250-pound, red-haired man who served as Hayden’s mayor for three years.

Boys lacrosse squad sets sights on state
The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team established itself as the team to beat in the Mountain Conference last season. This year, the Sailors have set out to establish themselves as a perennial power in boys lacrosse across the state.
