For promoters of new events who were hoping to get a chunk of the $75,000 supplied by the city of Steamboat Springs to increase tourism this summer, the word “bicycling” was a door opener.

Unemployment increased from 6.2 percent in December to 6.8 percent in January in Routt County, according to figures from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The number of people without jobs increased from 922 in December to 1,049 in January.

DUI patrols planned for St. Patrick’s Day weekend

Colorado State Patrol will set up saturation patrols in Moffat, Rio Blanco, Grand, Routt and Jackson counties. The increased enforcement period begins today and runs through Thursday.

Colorado skiers take classic races Thursday at NCAA championship

University of Denver and University of Colorado skiers fared well Thursday in the classic race at Howelsen Hill. CU senior Matt Gelso won the men’s 10-kilometer race, and DU skier Antje Maempel won the women's 5-kilometer race. Slalom races are today at Howelsen.

A Colorado Department of Transportation geologist said the rocky cliff in Mount Harris is relatively safe and that no mitigation work is needed to try to prevent future rockfalls similar to the one that killed Craig resident Karen Evanoff on Wednesday.

Steamboat girls tennis readies for regional run

The Sailors tennis team again will be the team to beat in the regional tournament. Steamboat has won five consecutive regional titles but should be heavily contested this season by Montrose, Aspen and Vail Mountain.

12:54 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of a suspicious incident at Bob Adams Airport, where a gate was stuck open. Officers checked the area and notified maintenance workers.

I-70 opening ends detour through Steamboat

4 days of closure brought traffic to some local businesses

By 4 p.m. Thursday, the Co­­lo­rado Department of Trans­portation announced it had reopened a lane of I-70 in each direction through Glenwood Canyon. The speed limit was reduced to 40 mph, and some wide trucks were restricted from using the narrow lanes.

Growing up in North Carolina, BJ Barham listened to a lot of Merle Haggard, George Jones and Hank Williams. As he got older, he fell in love with rock ’n’ roll. In the fall, we wrote about preservation being the up-and-coming green. Quoting the United Nations 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report, we noted that, “Over the whole building stock the largest portion of carbon savings by 2030 is in retrofitting existing buildings.” This makes sense for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that any new structure we build, no matter how green, can at best be carbon neutral, which so far is mathematically impossible.
