Steamboat snowboarders turn in top results

Steamboat Springs Several Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboarders had top finishes at competitions during the weekend.
Leading the way was Paul Brichta at the USSA Revolution Tour at Boreal Ski Area in California. Brichta won the halfpipe, assuring himself a spot at the Junior World Championships in August in New Zealand.
“When Paul landed his run,” club Snowboard Director Jon Casson said, “everybody knew that was the run to beat.”
In women’s snowboard cross, Jenna Feldman finished second, just three inches behind Olympian Faye Gulini. Gulini and Feldman battled throughout the finals, each taking the lead multiple times.
The finish almost certainly assures Feldman a spot in the Junior World Championships.
Natalie Geer had a good day in the halfpipe, finishing sixth. Grant Murray finished 16th in the slopestyle event but qualified for the finals in fourth place.
He landed his first frontside 1080, which he decided to do in midair, in his second qualification run.
Two other Steamboat snowboard cross athletes also picked up good finishes and remained in the seasonal NorAm hunt at a competition at Martock Ski Area in Nova Scotia.
Chloe Banning finished sixth and eighth in two events. The finishes dropped her from first to second in the NorAm standings, just points behind the leader.
Roger Carver also finished sixth and eighth and fell from second to fifth in the NorAm standings. But again, just points separate Carver from the top spot in the NorAm standings.
The snowboard team will leave Saturday for Mount Hood, Ore., to prepare to compete in another Revolution Tour as well as several NorAm events.
