Craig resident headed to work in Steamboat when rock struck car
Craig resident Karen Lynn Evanoff died Wednesday morning on U.S. Highway 40 east of Hayden when a boulder fell on the roof of the car she was riding in, killing her instantly.

The Hayden High School boys basketball team couldn't hang on for the win against Holyoke in Pueblo, losing 50-36.. The boys fall to the consolation bracket and will play at 10:45 a.m. today.

Giant slalom leads off national event at Steamboat Ski Area
The University of Utah’s Eva Huckova and Denver skier Leif Kristian Haugen became the first national champions crowned at the 2010 NCAA Skiing National Championships in Steamboat Springs, winning the giant slalom event at Steamboat Ski Area.
Steamboat freeskiers register solid finishes at Copper
The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freeskier team competed in the Rocky Mountain Series event at Copper Mountain during the weekend, registering several top finishes.
Steamboat snowboarders turn in top results
Several Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboarders had top finishes at competitions during the weekend. Leading the way was Paul Brichta at the USSA Revolution Tour at Boreal Ski Area in California. Brichta won the halfpipe, assuring himself a spot at the Junior World Championships in August in New Zealand.
Tigers basketball confident against tough field at state
The Hayden High School boys basketball team will face Holyoke High School at 1:15 p.m. today in the Class 2A state basketball tournament in Pueblo. Holyoke is the No. 2 team, with a 21-2 record.
Oak Creek to consider cultivation moratorium
Town Board wants time to craft marijuana law after dispensary approval
After approving a conditional license for a medical marijuana dispensary in January, the Oak Creek Town Board will consider tonight a moratorium to stop cultivation operations from gaining town approval. At a meeting at 7 p.m., the Town Board is scheduled to consider a 90-day moratorium that would prevent medical marijuana growing operations from gaining land use approval.
Steamboat briefs: Oak Creek gas station shuts down indefinitely
The only gas station in Oak Creek has shut down indefinitely, but the owner is working to find a new tenant to reopen the business. The Oak Creek Sinclair was shut down by its tenant Friday, owner Jon Peddie said.

12:02 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of a suspicious incident on Ingles Lane where a person reported hearing a man and woman yelling. Officers could not find the people.
City discusses possible US 40 zone changes
The Steamboat Springs Planning Commission meets today to discuss potential changes to two zone districts that guide commercial development along U.S. Highway 40 west and east of the city. The discussion will take place during the commission’s meeting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today in Centennial Hall.
Friday forum focuses on water education, issues
Event to include speakers from local, state, federal agencies
Friday’s water forum is just the beginning. The event from 1 to 5 p.m. at Bud Werner Memorial Library is the first in a series of water forums stretching to November, said Marsha Daughenbaugh, executive director of the Community Agriculture Alliance. Five speakers from local, state and federal agencies will give participants an overview of Colorado water issues and concerns.

The Hayden School Board heard recommendations during a special budget discussion meeting Wednesday night to remove about half a million dollars from the budget, and several jobs were on the table, including staff, directors and at least one administrator.

Workers break up boulder in Glenwood Canyon
CDOT hopes to open 1 lane of I-70 in each direction by tonight
Workers successfully broke up a huge boulder threatening to tumble down a cliff onto Interstate 70 in western Colorado on Wednesday, days after a rock slide closed the highway. Crews will have additional cleanup work today along with drainage work and pavement repair. CDOT will “make every effort” to reopen a lane in each direction today.

Moffat County Commissioner Audrey Danner addressed Wednesday the circumstances behind her research of the Hatch Act, a federal law that surfaced recently at the local level, during a news conference at the Moffat County Courthouse.
