Steamboat says ‘no’ to 700

City voters reject annexation 61 to 39 percent

The vote rejects what would have been the city's most substantial annexation since the Mount Werner ski resort area was folded into city limits decades ago. Danny Mulcahy, Steamboat 700 principal and project manager, said earlier today that his development team was not yet sure what its next step would be if voters denied Steamboat 700.

The drifting piece of paper near the top of the Morningside Lift caught the attention of the four Steamboat Springs High School students Sunday, but as they grabbed the envelope, they weren’t prepared for what they found. “Money exploded out of it,” Ty Hvambsal said. “It ended up being about $800.”

Ballots on proposed annexation due by 7 p.m. at City Hall

Steamboat Springs stands at a fork in the road today. Until 7 p.m. At that point, election officials will stop accepting ballots at City Hall, and city voters’ decision will be made. When the result of the Steamboat 700 annexation vote is announced, the city will set its course down a path that guides where, when and how Steamboat will grow for years to come.

Recycling yard up for vote

Commissioners could act today on business south of Oak Creek

Routt County commissioners could decide today whether to sanction a scrap metal recycling business that has been operating since August just south of Oak Creek. Kelly and Dixie Lipsie are seeking a special use permit needed to continue their business on land they lease from Jack and Andrea Brunton, just north of the intersection of Colorado Highway 131 and Routt County Road 14. The matter is on commissioners’ agenda for 2 p.m. today.

Biologists wary of new crayfish

New species may alter Yampa River; trappings to begin in April

Local wildlife experts are keeping an eye on a species of crayfish that was found in the Yampa River last year, and they plan to remove the invasive species. Several rusty crayfish were found in the Yampa River and Catamount Reservoir last year, and aquatic biologists said they might pose a risk to the health of other species.
