Voters younger than 35 have cast only about 14 percent of the ballots on the Steamboat 700 annexation, despite accounting for about 32 percent of total city voters and creating the demographic arguably most affected by long-term growth. 3,228 Steamboat residents had voted through Friday.

Festivities in the 37th annual Iditarod began Saturday with a ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage, Alaska. Racers will restart today at 3:45 p.m. Mountain Standard Time and begin making their way down the 1,150-mile trail that ends in Nome, Alaska.

The Soroco High School boys basketball team played about as well as it could Friday against Lutheran-Parker in a Class 2A basketball regional tournament in Broomfield but still found itself on the losing end. The top-seeded Lions won, 53-37.

Base area businesses trying to stay afloat
Efforts are under way to revive business activity at the base of Steamboat Ski Area, but some establishments are struggling to bridge the gap until those efforts pay off. City officials announced that base area sales tax revenues dropped about 10 percent in January.
Business File: City to host tax seminars Monday, Tuesday morning
The city of Steamboat Springs’ sales and use tax department is offering two free seminars about sales tax and construction use tax. The seminars are intended to provide tax information for all types of businesses or people. The construction use tax seminar is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, and the sales tax seminar is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The seminars are at Centennial Hall, 124 10th St., in Steamboat. The Steamboat Springs Bantam A hockey team sure has a habit of making things interesting. After getting a goal from Ryan Cagnoni in the final seconds of Friday’s win, Steamboat went to overtime Saturday before downing the Mountain States Renegades, 3-2.

Speculators initially bought at condominiums, but development is shifting
Short sales are proving to be the mechanism that is putting young families into condominiums in place of speculators at Sunray Meadows on Village Drive. During the overheated real estate run-up of 2007, speculators bought as many as four of the modest condominiums at a time, as the price increased to as high as $485,000 for a 1,060-square-foot two-bedroom unit with a one-car garage.
On the Market: Summit pushes ahead with affordable housing
Robert Allen, of the Summit Daily News, reported Feb. 21 that although demand for affordable housing in Summit County has dropped for households making more than 100 percent of the area median income, or AMI, a pair of affordable housing projects valued at a combined $31 million could break ground there as soon as this spring.
