Election judges began processing ballots Wednesday for a Steamboat 700 election that could surpass 5,000 votes by city residents. Steamboat Springs City Clerk Julie Franklin said Wednesday afternoon that 2,682 Steamboat residents had voted on the proposed annexation.
Steamboat's Olympic medalist Johnny Spillane visits Whiteman Primary
In what is likely the beginning of a whirlwind tour, Spillane, a Lowell Whiteman Primary School alumnus, visited the school in the afternoon Wednesday. The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team member recently returned to Steamboat Springs after winning three silver medals in the just completed Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Hayden boys lead the way as county hoops teams play for state
The Hayden High School boys basketball relived its biggest win of the season, which came Saturday against what had been considered the state’s No. 1 team, undefeated Meeker. Coach Mike Luppes said that will be little more than a footnote if the team can’t realize its next goal.

Event moved to town from Arapahoe Basin because of snow
Arapahoe Basin’s loss turned into Steamboat Springs’ gain. The final event for the NorAm Cup will start today at Mayer’s Mogul Run on Voo Doo ski run at Steamboat Ski Area. Qualification rounds start at 10 a.m. today and Friday, with finals scheduled to begin at about 2 p.m. Today is a singles moguls day, and Friday is a dual moguls day.

Steamboat briefs: South Routt School Board to discuss finances today
The South Routt School Board is scheduled to discuss whether to declare fiscal exigency at tonight’s meeting at the district administrative offices in Oak Creek. If approved, it will be the first legal step for the district to lay off employees before the 2010-11 school year, if it chooses to do so to help address a projected budget shortfall in excess of $472,000.

The Education Fund Board approved a $2.31 million budget Wednesday night for the 2010-11 school year. The budget sets the allocation amounts for the Technology/Capital and Educational Excellence commissions.

Yampa Town Board OKs building fee increases
Several members displeased with higher costs
The Yampa Town Board agreed to go along with fee increases proposed by the Routt County Regional Building Department, but several members were unhappy with the prices. County Building Official Carl Dunham, who through an intergovernmental agreement is also the Yampa building official, told the Town Board on Wednesday that the increases are necessary to maintain service.
Moffat commissioners start work for Swinging Bridge rehabilitation
The Moffat County Commission voted to purchase two new cables to stretch across the Swinging Bridge. The cables, which will be the same diameter as the current ones, will cost $14,855 each and will arrive in about three months.
