Drop in drilling permits concerns officials

Moffat County saw a decrease in drilling permit applications filed by oil and natural gas companies in 2009. Some area officials say new regulations designed to better protect wildlife and the environment from potential harm caused by drilling for oil and gas are to blame, while others point to a downward economy or a drop in natural gas prices.

Ken Collins: It all evens out

When the 2002 Olympic flame skipped Steamboat on its way to Salt Lake City and went to Aspen instead, we were adult and had our own flame. When the Nordic combined team won silver the other night and Steamboat was never mentioned, I was upset, because we’ve heard Park City and Vail mentioned so often. Every “up close and personal” always starts with where they are from or train. Not so with our kids. But remember this: When it’s all over and everybody goes back home, those other athletes don’t get to return to Steamboat. I guess it all evens out.

Our View: County presents interesting growth plan

The Routt County Board of Commissioners shifted direction last week regarding 5-acre subdivisions in the county, expressing more openness toward the possibility of developers building those rural subdivisions outside the city of Steamboat Springs’ urban growth boundary.

School can reapply for funding to help build facility

Groundbreaking for the new North Routt Community Charter School won’t happen this spring, as originally planned. Law could end Wiggins’ run for Routt County sheriff

ACET leader to continue campaign while Hatch Act is examined

Garrett Wiggins is looking into a 1939 federal law that could prevent him from running for elected office, but he said he is continuing his campaign until the question is resolved.

Bud Rogers: Vote ‘yes’ on 700

The City Council, city staff and many others have been diligent in researching and negotiating the annexation of Steamboat 700. Danny Mulcahy and his mostly local design professionals have presented, through open houses and continuing information, development plans that try to help solve our growing affordable housing needs here in town.

Dennis Howard: Vote ‘no’ on 700

Can we please all stop abusing and overusing the phrases “affordable housing” and “attainable housing”? First of all, the definitions are way out of whack with what is really affordable for most people in this town. How many people do you know making $20 an hour on a year-round basis? How many young couples do you know who are making $80,000 a year or more? If you are, then consider yourself blessed, because if you look around town, a majority of the jobs are in the retail, restaurant and lodging sectors. Store clerks, housekeepers, front desk agents, maintenance people, waiters and waitresses, shuttle drivers, cooks and others who work in this town are not making $40,000 a year. A lot of these are unfortunately only seasonal jobs. These are the people on the front lines who give Steamboat Springs our great reputation for being a friendly town.

Commissioners discuss adding jail administrator

Sheriff asks county to consider adding person to oversee operations, increase efficiency

Members of the Routt County Board of Commissioners told Sheriff Gary Wall on Monday that they have no intention of creating a new position for a jail administrator. However, they agreed in principle with the need for one and said they might be willing to reclassify an existing position in the Routt County Sheriff’s Department to make it happen.
