Buzz for bikers

Free coffee is available to all bike commuters this week from Lil’ House, Starbucks, Amante, Creekside, Winona’s, Freshies and Zoom Coffee Shop.

— It’s a five-mile ride both ways for Rich Hager, taking 20 or 30 minutes depending on the weather.

The ride from his home to his office, at Honey Stinger in downtown Steamboat Springs, has made him a believer in biking to work.

“It’s just a good time to think,” Hager said. “Steamboat’s unlike most cities. You can actually enjoy the ride without a lot of traffic. It’s definitely better for the environment, plus, it’s just a good time to get some exercise and organize your day.”

Hager’s Honey Stinger is among many Steamboat businesses and organizations embracing the simple pleasure of a ride to work today through Saturday, as Colorado’s Bike to Work month comes to a head in Steamboat Springs with Bike to Work Week.

Festivities and events begin today as the town’s biggest cycling proponents come together for the cause.

“This is a great way to kick off the summer,” said Riley Polumbus, of the local cycling advocacy group Routt Country Riders. “This is a great week to create more awareness for cycling.”

The week’s planned activities — in addition to cycling to and from work — start at 5:30 p.m. today with an all-levels, group mountain bike ride on Emerald Mountain, starting at Orange Peel Bicycle Service on Yampa Street.

Another Orange Peel-based event, a group road ride, starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, Honey Stinger and Big Agnes will sponsor free coffee and treats from 7 to 9 a.m. in front of the Routt County Courthouse in downtown Steamboat.

Ski and Bike Kare will put on a skills clinic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Howelsen Hill. There’s a Ski Haus Poker Ride starting at 5 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, a bike rally sponsored by Wheels Bike Shop is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., also starting on the Routt County Courthouse lawn.

“It’s a good community event,” Hager said about the week. “This is a bike-friendly community. Our employees are all interested in riding and outdoor activities, and this is a good community event for that.”

But as much as the events will serve as the backbone of the week, Polumbus said the public embracing the day-to-day effort of hopping on the bike instead of turning on the car is what will truly make the week a success.

“It’s addictive,” she said. “It’s fun to leave the car at home and see how many days you can go without driving it, to see how many things you can do with your bike. Even going to the grocery store or going to see a friend or just making a trip downtown, it’s fun trying to figure out how to do it all without a car.”
