— The early members of the band included rock legends Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, which later led to extensive touring with the Grateful Dead and acts such as Janis Joplin and The Band.

They toured the country constantly with a rotating list of members and had their biggest hit in 1973 with “Panama Red.”

Now, more than 40 years since it was formed, the New Riders of the Purple Sage will appear at Old Town Pub on Tuesday to play two 75-minute sets.

Old Town Pub manager Kurt Vordermeier said the concert will start a little bit earlier than most — 8 p.m., with an acoustic opening act at 7 p.m. — to appeal to the crowd the New Riders of the Purple Sage attracts.

“We’re going to get started early, which is something different for us, but we figure with the construction, it being a Tuesday night and the age of the fan base of the band, a lot of people complain about being out late,” he said.

Tickets are $10 in advance at Old Town Pub or All That Jazz, or $15 at the door.

Vordermeier, 46, said the band is a bit before his time, but he grew up hearing “Panama Red,” the single from the band’s only gold album, on the radio.

“I’ve always been a fan of that music,” he said.

The band is drawing a positive local response since the show was announced, he said, and 15 to 20 tickets were sold by Thursday afternoon.

The band was formed with John Dawson, David Nelson, Garcia, Lesh and Mickey Hart in 1969, and has had enough changes in the lineup during that time that the band’s website has a “family tree” with several of the combinations. The band has put out more than a dozen albums, including the most recent, “Where I Come From,” in 2009 after a band revival in 2005.

The current lineup includes Nelson and longtime member Buddy Cage, along with Michael Falzarano on guitar and vocals, Ronnie Penque on bass and vocals, and Johnny Markowski on drums and vocals.
