— A couple has signed a lease to bring a new fitness center to Central Park Plaza, and the two hope to open it within 60 days.

Guy Coffey said he and his wife have just signed the lease to open a 4,700-square-foot gym in the empty building next to Christy Sports, the former home of Celebrations party supply store.

Anytime Fitness will have 24-hour access for members and will include cardio and strength training equipment, tanning beds and “on-demand” video fitness classes.

Coffey said the on-demand classes would be available in a 600-square-foot room, where members can choose from 40 lessons that will appear on a screen and can be used by one to 15 people at a time. He said those would be available 24 hours a day, as well.

Coffey and his wife, Steffie, along with business partners Jennifer and Dan Bailey, have other Anytime Fitness franchises in Montrose, Cañon City and Conifer. He said they wanted to open the franchise in Steamboat Springs because “this is the kind of town, to be honest, that we want to live in.”

He said he and his wife grew up in small towns and have focused their business on bringing gyms to towns with populations of 10,000 to 15,000. They plan to move to Steamboat.

There are a total of 1,300 Anytime Fitness gyms in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, and memberships at one club are valid at all other clubs. The company reports that it has nearly 1 million members worldwide.

“We looked at the competitive landscape and just the fitness level of everybody here, it looked like there was enough space in town for another fitness opportunity,” he said.

Peak Fitness, in downtown Steamboat, also offers 24-hour access for long-term members, a representative there said Friday.

Coffey said he did not want to announce prices for the club yet. He said it depends on a lot of factors and prices can vary from club to club. A person who answered the phone at the Conifer location also was reluctant to give a firm price but said the memberships are for 12 months and run from $30 to $40 per month.
