Racers flocked to Wednesday's Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series event, filling the Yampa River Core Trail on their way and clogging the starting area before the race. Brad Bingham was all alone when he rushed around the final corner, however, cruising to his second victory this season in the series.

With less than two weeks left to campaign in the U.S. Senate primary in Colorado, Republican candidates Jane Norton and Ken Buck show no signs of slowing down. Norton will attend a breakfast at Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs on Thursday to speak about issues facing residents.

The Routt County Board of Commissioners used every bit of 4 1/2 hours Tuesday night to reach unanimous consensus in favor of the Yampa Valley Sand and Gravel pit project. The mine six miles south of Steamboat Springs could produce more than 300 tons of crushed rock annually for two decades.

Steamboat's Johnny Spillane tears ACL, MCL, likely out 4 to 6 months

Three-time Olympic silver medalist Johnny Spillane hurt his knee while cliff-jumping into a lake while attending teammate Billy Demong's wedding earlier this month. Spillane had surgery Tuesday and said doctors have told him he should be ready for the 2011 season, including the 2011 World Championships in Oslo-Holmenkollen, Norway.

Report: Child poverty down in Routt County, up in state

While the number of children living in poverty increased 50 percent statewide from 2000 to 2008, the percentage decreased 13 percent in Routt County, according to a report released Thursday.

Tim Walsh, who served as Routt County sheriff from 1983 to 1990, died July 5 in Hawaii at age 62.

Ballot drop-off locations located across Routt County

Final day to drop off GOP primary election ballots is Aug. 10

About 400 Republican primary ballots have been turned in to the Routt County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. The final day of the primary is Aug. 10, but Clerk’s Office officials say primary voters should have their ballots in the mail at least a week before then.

Our View: Wirth contributions stretch far and wide

Andy Wirth’s hire as chief executive officer of Squaw Valley USA is a resounding testament to his talents as a ski resort executive, as well as a tremendous loss to the entire Steamboat Springs community. His dedication to the economic success of the Yampa Valley throughout the past two decades should not be underestimated, nor should the legacy he will leave through many of the efforts he undertook.

A free workshop about energy efficiency is Thursday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center where the roof soon could hold a set of solar panels. The Governor’s En­­ergy Office is hosting the event as part of the office’s statewide tour to promote its high-performance building program, which is intended to help state-funded projects reduce energy consumption and build with sustainable prac­­tices.

2 men were injured in the Friday night altercation

A fight Friday night in Hahn’s Peak ended with one man in the hospital and another in jail. Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the fight at Hahn’s Peak near Steamboat Lake on Friday night.

Art in the Park raises $4K for Steamboat Springs Arts Council

Art Council explores expanding educational programs

The Steamboat Springs Arts Council raised almost $4,000 in donations at Art in the Park, its largest fundraiser of the year. The festival, which took place July 9 and 10, collected $3,797 and will be used to improve and expand educational programs, Arts Council program coordinator Rachel Radetsky said.

Steamboat construction company TCD downsizes

TCD, the construction company that branched off from TIC 17 years ago and expanded across the Western Slope, is significantly paring down its size and scope amid a construction industry experiencing a devastating lack of work in Routt County. “We’re downsizing, for sure,” TCD President Rick Brodie said Tuesday.

Steamboat briefs: Mount Werner water plans service shut-off Thursday

Some Mount Werner Water and Sanitation District customers will have their water service turned off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday while the district completes connections to a new water main at Ski Trail Lane and Val D’Isere Circle.

12:06 a.m. A Steamboat Springs Police Department officer was flagged down by a person about items falling from a car near Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue. Officers found the car and arrested a 48-year-old Broomfield man on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Jury awards $555,000 in Rabbit Ears Pass vehicle crash

A Jefferson County jury has awarded a Lakewood man $555,000 in damages after a crash near Steamboat Springs in September 2008 reportedly left him with permanent neck pain.
