Mary White, of Clark, to be Routt County Fair queen

Mary White, a 15-year-old from Clark, will represent the Routt County Fair as this year’s royalty queen.

Six girls from Routt County competed in tryouts held July 18 at the Routt County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall to be members of this year’s fair royalty. Three judges evaluated the girls on poise, appearance and public speaking ability.

Clark replaced Brianna Wilhelm as queen. Wilhelm, 19, of Steamboat Springs, served as a member of the fair royalty — for girls ages 8 to 19 — for the past three years.

Joining Clark is Natalie Morton, 12, of Hayden, as first attendant. She replaces Kacie Babcock, 10, of Hayden.

This year’s royalty second attendant is Zava Zupan, 11, of Clark. Tia Rozell, 14, of Oak Creek, is this year’s third attendant. Zava and Tia were members of Fair Royalty last year.

Missy Wilhelm, a royalty Committee coordinator and member of the Fair Board, has said the fair royalty helps promote the county’s agricultural heritage. It used to be geared toward girls who participated in 4-H or National FFA Organization but now gives girls who don’t own livestock a chance to experience that heritage.

Being named fair royalty requires the girls to appear at the county fair in addition to other events, including the Hayden Christmas Tree Festival, North Western Colorado Bull Sale, Cayuse Classic, Bunkhouse Bull Session, the parade in Hayden during the fair and the Steamboat Springs and Yampa Fourth of July parades in 2011.
