City Council honors Hall of Fame broadcaster Verne Lundquist

Sitting Friday morning on his back deck overlooking Steam­boat Ski Area, Verne Lundquist joked about how little he knew about being asked to attended Tuesday’s Steamboat Springs City Council meeting. Lundquist initially thought his presence at the meeting was requested to celebrate longevity — he turned 70 on July 17 — but soon realized he was being recognized for something far more meaningful.

Regional crews battle new wildfires

Wildland firefighters spent Saturday battling new wildfires in Moffat and Rio Blanco counties as warm, dry weather continues to fuel the blazes. No fires have been reported in Routt County, said Lynn Barclay, public information officer for the Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office and the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit.

The Steamboat Springs Am­­er­­ican Legion baseball team was relegated to the losers bracket Friday after falling to Rangely, 10-2, in the second round of the district tournament. Second-seeded Rangely took advantage of eight errors from third-seeded Steamboat to run away with the game.

A trade association for Colorado’s ski industry has decided it will no longer disclose how much business its members log each season. Colorado Ski Country USA has traditionally provided the number of skier and snowboard rider visits that each of its members recorded throughout the course of the ski season.
