Steamboat's Team Lightning strikes Montrose

Swimming squad places 6th at meet with more than 20 teams

— Despite having just seven swimmers at a weekend event, the Steamboat Springs Team Lightning Swim Team continued to see the payoff from a summer of swimming.

Against more than 20 teams and 300 swimmers, Steamboat placed sixth with its small contingent of swimmers Friday through Sunday at the Montrose Summer Open.

A slew of competitors picked up wins for Steamboat. Sarah Kite was first in the girls 11 and 12 50-yard fly. Frank Ruppel, competing in the boys 11 and 12 division, won the 50 back, 200 back and 100 back. Samantha Terranova picked up wins in the girls 11 and 12 100 free, 100 fly, 200 free and 400 free.

Beyond wins, though, several swimmers stood out beyond the results.

Adding to the point totals was 6-and-younger first-year swimmer Arianna Tullis. Despite the high level of competition at the event, Tullis picked up a much-needed 31.5 points in her five events to help the team get its high finish.

“Just her willingness to come down there kept our team in the running,” coach Jill Ruppel said. “She dropped time in all but one event and was a little heart charger.”

Terranova also made her sixth state cut time for the Junior Olympic event during the last day of competition, and Brenden Carta finally hit his goal time in the 100 breast after paying to do a time trial.

“He said, ‘I’m not leaving this facility until I hit my goal,’” Jill Ruppel said. “He hit his goal exactly. That was a high moment.”

The team now prepares for this weekend’s Western Slope League Summer Championships in Grand Junction.

The regional meet mixes summer and year-round swim clubs. It serves as the last chance to get a qualifying time for the state meet. Steamboat is expected to take more than 25 swimmers to the meet.

The team already has qualified three swimmers — Terranova, Harry Wilson and Frank Ruppel — for the state meet.

“I believe we can get at least six or seven to the state meet,” Jill Ruppel said.
