Man accused of attempted murder; more charges expected

The Steamboat man accused of shooting his wife and then himself was formally booked into Routt County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder Wednesday. He had been hospitalized since June.

Spots still available in second, shorter race

The Livestrong Ride 4 Yellow announced Wednesday that its longest ride, the 26-mile Ride the Divide tour along the Continental Divide that Arm­strong will participate in, has reached its 200-rider capacity. Plenty of space still remains for the second ride of the Aug. 8 event.

E. coli closes beach again at Steamboat Lake

A park ranger said he thought the elevated levels of bacteria resulted from high winds blowing particles into the swim beach area. Matthew Schuler said Steamboat Lake State Park employees had retested the lake and hoped to reopen the beach as soon as Thursday.

Some trails open on Emerald Mountain

A number of trails will be opened for just one week. Included are the lower Quarry Mountain trail to where it intersects Quarry Mountain connector, then that trail over to the Forest Loop and Hudson trails.

September's Run Rabbit Run 50-mile race has hit its 150-racer cap. Organizers attributed the rapid growth in popularity to the fact that the race has been added to the Montrail Ultra Cup race series as it enters its fourth year.

Owner awaits damage estimate from insurance companies

The cause of the fire Saturday night at the Rabbit Ears Motel still is undetermined. Steamboat Springs Fire Res­cue Fire Marshal Jay Muhme said the investigation into the fire’s cause hasn’t begun.

Craig woman listed in fair condition after crash

Yvette Puhl involved in two-vehicle crash Monday night

A Craig woman sustained life-threatening injuries Monday night in a two-vehicle crash two miles south of Craig, the Colorado State Patrol reported in a news release. Yvette Puhl was transported to The Memorial Hospital in Craig and later taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. On Tuesday, St. Mary’s reported that Puhl was listed in fair condition.

Lightning cause behind two Moffat County wildfires Monday

Lightning in Northwest Colorado is believed to be the cause behind numerous wildfires that crews worked Monday and Tuesday to contain, according to the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit. Unit spokeswoman Lynn Barclay said lightning started 11 fires in recent days.

Routt County unemployment drops in June

Area saw decrease to 9.4 percent from 10.5 percent in May

The unemployment rate in Routt County dropped to 9.4 percent in June, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. That’s down from 10.5 percent in May — the highest unemployment percentage in the county since 1992.

Tony Zabel to earn stipend next school year as secondary principal duties increase

The Hayden School District will save $109,000 next school year after restructuring its administration. Superintendent Mike Luppes said the district will have 2 1/2 administrators for the 2010-11 school year instead of the four it had last school year.

Routt County Commissioners decide on top 12 priorities for fairgrounds

Year-round shower, restroom facilities top concerns listed in master plan

The Routt County Board of Com­­m­­is­­sion­­ers approved, 3-0, a list of the top 12 priorities for the Fairgrounds Master Plan Update, which include facility improvements to expand the use of the fairgrounds year-round and improve functioning during the annual Routt County Fair.

12:44 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of an intoxicated person in the 1100 block of Oak Street. A 42-year-old man and his roommate were involved in an altercation that wasn’t physical and decided to work it out.
