Charlie MacArthur: Appealing to a new generation
A Ronald Reagan quote jumps out at me the week following my first attendance at a tea party event. I admit I entered as a skeptic, uncertain if I was ready to be labeled in any direction, and unsure whether I could find relevance and meaning in a fringe political party. I was surprised. The people I met at the 1773 Club meeting were busy. Many of those present own multiple companies and have far less time than I to be stepping out of the box. I did not meet anybody whom I would classify as a “radical.” No guns were shot, no discrimination present and no animals harmed during the course of the evening. What the group did lack, though, was youth. I accounted for about one-third of the individuals younger than 30. For a group aiming to change the direction of a nation, the problem of youth recruitment is no small problem.

Ken Collins: Goldberg no expert
Jonah Goldberg’s op-ed on July 10 was about experts that “don’t even know they’re not experts.” One issue he brought up was that China has banned plastic bags. So has California and a couple of other states. He laughs off the amount of oil that saves. He mentions the reusable bags many people use now are breeding grounds for E. coli, etc. You have to clean the bags. “That’s a hassle,” he says.
Our View: Park changes needed OK from council
For being such a peaceful parcel of open space, Rita Valentine Park sure knows how to cause an uproar. The 40-acre chunk of land off Anglers Drive — and an adjoining 35-acre parcel also used by residents — is treasured by nearby homeowners for its trails and wildlife habitat. It’s also an obvious target for community groups looking for space for their activities of choice.
