Fire ignites at Rabbit Ears Motel

Police officer suffered from smoke inhalation

The fire was in Room 106 at the downtown motel. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue responded, and one police officer suffered from smoke inhalation. A witness said the room was empty at the time of the fire.

They also pose a significant safety concern for those who frequent roads and trails in the Routt and Medicine Bow national forests, U.S. Forest Service timber manager Andy Cadenhead said.

2 Steamboat residents hurt in wreck

Three people, including two Steamboat residents, were hurt Friday evening in a car wreck on U.S. Highway 40 in Grand County. Brittany Schwantes of Wisconsin and Thomas and Mary Simmins of Steamboat were taken to the hospital in Kremmling.

The athletes laid down strong finishes at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships. Linnea Dixson finished third Friday, Peter Kalmes won the C1 men’s 25-29 race today and Kai Rogers, 16, won his age group’s downhill race today.

Looking Back for July 19, 1935

The construction done by the town board this spring on the Fish Creek water line has increased the flow from Fish Creek 62 percent. When this line was first put in the flow averaged 1.65 cubic feet per second. A few years afterwards it decreased to 1.35 cubic feet per second. After the new work was completed, the flow increased to 2.35 cubic feet per second.

The Hayden Public Library proudly announces its fifth Reader of the Week, Tyler Hockaday. Tyler, 11, will be going into the sixth grade at Hayden Middle School in the fall. His parents are Stephanie Rickman and Shawn Hockaday. Tyler is the oldest of six brothers and sisters: Emily, 7 months, Matthew, 2, Joseph, 4, Dustin, 6, and Austin, 8.

12:26 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Depart­­ment officers were called to a report of an open garage door in the 800 block of Critter Court. Officers closed the door and secured the building.

Steamboat Briefs: CNCC offers sign language basics class in Hayden

The cost is $36, and the class will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Mondays at Hayden Public Library. The class starts Monday.
