— The first day of the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships yielded strong results for Steamboat Springs riders.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club cycling coach Ben Clark said Sarah Dixson and Jeffrey Gay led the way for local riders in the their first action of the massive four-day event at SolVista in Granby.

Dixson finished second in her age group in the cross-country C2 mountain biking division.

“She was psyched,” Clark said. “We was nine minutes off the lead but had a great race and felt good at the end.”

Gay was 14th in the boy’s division of the same event.

“He had a great race,” Clark said. “He had a little trouble toward the end but finished pretty well.”

Alec Schaffer was 25th, Dane Dixson was 31st, Evan Weinman placed 39th and Erik Petersen was 45th.

“We’re really happy,” Clark said. “The kids really persevered and did really well. They’re happy with their finishes but psyched to do better in the future.”

The Winter Sports Club participation in the event continues at 9:05 a.m. today when Linnea Dixson rides in the cross-country C1 15-16, 17-18 female race.
