Steamboat Springs Police Department officers went to the 3200 block of Après Ski Way at about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a violation of a restraining order. Brian Richard Bifulco, the man they were looking for, reportedly got into a taxi as officers were on their way and was taken to Dream Island Plaza. Officers met him there, but the 42-year-old Bifulco reportedly got on a bicycle and tried to flee.

Sgt. Gerard Geis said Bifulco rode his bicycle into the Yampa River behind West Lincoln Park, near the 13th Street Bridge. Officers then coaxed Bifulco to get out of the river and took him to Yampa Valley Medical Center to be checked and treated for minor injuries before they arrested him on suspicion of violation of a protection order.

Lodging barometer predicts near 80 percent occupancy

This weekend is expected to be busy, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s lodging barometer. The forecast shows that 81 percent of visitor pillows are expected to be occupied Saturday night, amounting to 11,100 people in town. That would be an increase from the 10,800 people in town for the same weekend in 2009.

Last weekend, for the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art in the Park, the town saw 10,000 visitors, a 73 percent occupancy rate. That’s 1,300 more than were expected but 400 fewer than last year.

The barometer forecasts 6,300 visitors for Wednesday and 6,900 for July 24.
