Bingham, Jacques-Grewal use contrasting styles to win Town Challenge race

— As Wednesday’s Sunshine Loop cross-country bike race proved, there’s certainly more than one way and one strategy to win a race.

Brad Bingham knew if he wanted to win the men’s open division he’d have to stay with Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series giant Barkley Robinson on the uphill and attack on the downhill.

Tammy Jacques-Grewal knew she had to pound the uphill and build enough of a lead on the downhill to hold off Town Challenge stalwart Kelly Boniface.

Both were able to do so in the series’ fourth race of the season, winning their respective divisions.

“I took a few many risks,” said Bingham, who picked up his first Town Challenge win of the season in the series’ longest race. “I did a super downhill race on Sunday in Winter Park. I enjoy downhilling, and I ride a dirt bike, as well.”

Bingham finished the 12.8-mile course that went up Zig Zag, over to Valley View and to the Sunshine Trail before descending back down Zig Zag in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 30 seconds.

Robinson finished in 1:09:45, and Pete Kalmes was third in 1:11:49.

Robinson led for most of the way, including all of the uphill. Bingham finally caught him just before Creekside.

“I had a little gap on the climb,” Robinson said. “But Brad destroyed the downhill and closed the gap.”

Jacques-Grewal said to have any chance to win, she knew she’d need a 20-minute lead after the uphill.

Although she didn’t quite get that number, her lead was just big enough. She finished the ride in 1:24:49 with Boniface in second in 1:25:00. Kate Rench was third in 1:32:30.

“I knew I had to have a good-sized gap to win,” Jacques-Grewal said. “But I felt good (Wednesday). I just knew I needed a gap on Kelly. I didn’t know the descent.”

Said Boniface, “Just as we were getting down, I saw her. Then I ran out of real estate.”

The Town Challenge returns July 28 with another Emerald cross-country race.
