10-year-old Jordyn Hetrick has raised more than $1,000 for annual event

Jordyn Hetrick guessed that she walked about 100 laps during last year’s Steamboat Springs Relay For Life. The 10-year-old is participating again this year in the event, which is July 23 and 24 at the Steamboat Springs High School track.

Crowds attend Steamboat's Art in the Park, balloon rodeo

A Steamboat Springs Arts Council official said Saturday's Art in the Park had the largest turnout she's seen, and Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association officials estimated that about 3,500 people came to the launch field for the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo on Saturday morning.

The wind was ever-present, a constant force blowing north with such regularity that someone might as well have been driving in front of Steamboat Springs mountain biker Erik Lobeck with a fan.“I think I only rode 30 miles not into a headwind,” he said Thursday. That’s saying something, considering the Tour Divide runs 2,745 miles along North America’s backbone, the Continental Divide.

Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports' three-day Bikin’ the ’Boat Adaptive Cycling Camp let people with disabilities and their families ride a hand cycle, a three-wheeled vehicle powered by the arms, on Mount Werner. Andy and Craig Kennedy, who worked with STARS to host the camp, hope the event will grow.

The popular Sweet Pea Market and Cafe appears to be doing brisk business with its fresh foods, new menu items and an expanded deck this summer — but customers might want to use the bathroom before stopping by. The downtown Steamboat Springs business has more customer seating than state regulations allow for a food establishment with only one bathroom.

Looking Back for July 12, 1935

The United States bureau of public roads will open bids next Wednesday, July 17, for the oil surfacing of the Rabbit Ears Pass highway, a project 20.705 miles in length, located in Grand, Jackson and Routt counties. This road was completed and gravel surfaced last year. It is an important link in Highway 40.

It is the Hayden Public Library’s honor to proudly announce the fourth Reader of the Week, Caroline Zirkle. Summit Extreme baseball gets set for next round

The Summit Extreme 13-and-younger baseball team finished the round-robin portion of the USSSA State Championship tournament in Westminster and Arvada this weekend exactly where it had hoped. Entering today’s elimination phase, the squad will be one of the top two seeds.

The other night I sat through one of those youth soccer games at Heritage Park, and I couldn’t help but scratch my head as the game unfolded. They don’t count the goals, the coach keeps yelling something about passing the ball, and people along the sidelines cheer for both teams no matter which team is winning.
